Photographer’s notes: Niagara Falls

niagara

IT was 3am when I arrived at the Canadian side of Niagara Falls. Myself and another photographer made the impromptu trip, departing Toronto at 1:30am to ensure we arrived with time to set up in the best position before the sun rose. Niagara Falls is completely different in the early morning, quiet except for the falls and with the air of the small town it once was; by the late morning and early afternoon it’s full of tourists and tour buses and the whole atmosphere changes.

On this morning it was drizzling, and the air was crisp as it was mid-September. We paced around waiting for the light to arrive while trying to keep our lenses dry. We chatted to stay awake and alert and excited — and then the light began to arrive. The rain stopped. The mist that hangs over the Falls let up a bit, and what remained began catching the light. Not another soul was around. We fell completely silent, that agreed silence between photographers who are encroaching on a special image — all that was left was the enormous roar of the water and the quiet clicks of the cameras.

As the morning light finally fell on the falls, it was magic. They changed colours a dozen times over the process of the sun rising — blues, pinks, oranges, and purples all came to say hello. After I captured this image, the image I was really seeking to get, with all the pastel colours and lit-up mist and a slightly longer exposure to get the rush of the water, I broke our silence with a joyous whoop. The early rise, the drive, the chilly air — it was all worth it for this one image.

Rosie Huntington-Whiteley rocks eye-catching outfit during London outing

Rosie Huntington-Whiteley rocks eye-catching outfit during London outing 02

Rosie Huntington Whiteley‘s high-in-demand modeling career constantly keeps her out in the public eye, and the British supermodel never fails to make every one of her outings just as impressive if not more than the last.

The twenty-seven year-old beauty looked every inch the world-class supermodel that she is when she hit the streets of London during a damp and cloudy day on Wednesday (January 28th). Showing off her pearly whites, the former Victoria’s Secret Angel could not have looked any more high-spirited to be back in her home country despite the English capital’s dull weather.

Leaving her glossy blonde locks loose and displaying a dash of dark auburn on her plump lips, Huntington-Whiteley was seen rocking a field drab-colored coat on top of a crisp white v-neck top and a pair of skinny denim blue jeans which were only visible until the knees, concealed from that area down by a set of bronze-colored suede boots that were studded at the ankles.

Weird Ingredient Wednesday: You Should Be Adding Charcoal to Your Food & Here’s Why

Charcoal is a famously prized substance when it comes to food and drink. Grilling aficionados swear by it, and its purifying properties make it the main ingredient in Brita filters (and its alternatives).

Powdered charcoal is also a cooking ingredient. Yes, that’s right: it can actually go in your food—and the results are delightful. Some even say that because of charcoal’s ability to absorb organic toxins, it might even make your food better for you (although that’s up for debate). However, what is undeniable is that many ERs keep it on hand to deal with poisoning cases.

Shoe Gallery / Plazma Architecture Studio

Location: Gedimino prospektas 9, Vilnius 01110,
Architect In Charge: Rytis Mikulionis, Paulius Paskačimas, Evelina Talandzevičienė (Wallpaper graphic design: Daiva Čiuplytė

From the architect. A multi-brand footwear store Shoe Gallery is located in a modern retail centre, which has inhabited a historic building in the central part of Vilnius, Lithuania.

The store is divided into two zones that are based on the L-shaped premises: the main display space which is positioned in front of the entrance and the additional display areas straight off the corner. The space in the first-plan of the store hosts the main footwear exposition. The new collections are placed on the display units that are designed to function as podiums. This zone can be perceived as an actual shoe gallery, just like the title of the store suggests. The space is highlighted by using custom-made luminaries that the interior architects designed for this project in particular.

The rest of the space, positioned in the far-away corner offers display space for the standard footwear exposition. One of the main goals of the interior architects was to make the store work well in terms of function both for the retailers and the customers. For this reason a custom modular exposition system was created: original wall-fixed and free-standing modular systems were designed using standard retail furniture fittings.

Also, footwear brand logos that are suspended from a profile that follows the entire perimeter of the store provides a subtle division between the product brands. In addition, the construction elements of the building are integrated into retail equipment, which offers even more display space as well as precious wall surface for placing the mirrors. These units are decorated in black ceramic tiles.

Project architects wanted to challenge the common perception of a standard footwear store as a merely functional and neutral retail space. This concept stands out in the details. Concrete, metal, wall panelling, glass, ceramic tiles, wallpaper – the wide spectrum of materials used in the project helps create a sense of dynamics.

The concept was taken further by designing custom wallpapers. The pattern of the wallpapers is also used for decorating the glazed partitions. The geometry-inspired, mid-century colour-themed wallpapers and fitting zones as well as the yellow-metal modular display system makes a visit to a standard footwear store feel like a funky fashion experience.

The Earth through an astronaut’s eyes

Watch the Earth like you’ve never before, from the International Space Station (ISS), 350 kilometres away from our planet’s surface.

Guillaume Juin compiled shots from five ISS expeditions to make this vivid time-lapse and the result is brilliant in every possible way. The array of colours and lights visible from space is astonishing, and the details astronauts can observe from this distance are impressive. “The little green and purple lights you can see at 1’57 are respectively fishing boats and oil platforms offshore with the big city of Bangkok nearby”, explains the filmmaker.

Give it a watch and feel your world shrink into a ball of light as the ISS spins around the earth at 28,000 kilometres per hour.

Elena Perminova goes from baby bump to sculpted abs in 60 days

Elena Perminova goes from baby bump to sculpted abs in just 60 days

Elena Perminova has become a proud member of the numerous group of models-turned-mothers for the third time, and the Russian mannequin proved that getting completely rid of the post-baby weight can be achieved in as little as less than two months.

The twenty-eight year-old beauty, who is the wife of media tycoon and former Soviet KGB spy Alexander Lebedev, revealed that she began training just two weeks after giving birth to her third child, Arina, in April 2014, despite having a Caesarean section performed. “There were no breaks at weekends,” she told her country’s edition of Vogue about her baby body boot camp.

Perminova is featured in a stunning couple of before and after images for the Russian fashion bible. The first, taken before welcoming her youngest offspring, sees her posing nude as she proudly shows off her then eight-month old baby bump, while the second shot displays an enviably sculpted post-pregnancy stomach after only sixty days of exercising.

“Before exercising I visualise the desired result – a thin waist, provocative hips, well-turned arms,” explained the statuesque blonde, who also credits Instagram for giving her the motivation to keep in tip top shape. “Thanks to the social networks, sports becomes accessible. You do not need to hire a celebrity coach. It is enough to follow their account and watch a couple of videos.”

“I can’t stop reading the Instagram of Brazilian supermodel, Victoria’s Secret Angel Izabel Goulart (@iza_goulart), Perminova admitted. “Just look at Izabel walking in her micro bikini on the podium.”
