Bathed in color and silhouetted by sunset, Pedro Perucho stands on the steaming rim of Paricutin volcano, Mexico. While technically extinct, the volcano continues to emit clouds of steam above rocky ground still hot to the touch. Shot with Microsoft Lumia 640 XL.
The tools of photography are changing and the speed at which the smartphone camera technology is improving is astounding. The above image is a testament to what’s possible today with the latest technology found on mid-tier smartphones.
In partnership with Microsoft, Stephen Alvarez, a National Geographic photographer has been traveling around the world taking photos of the Seven Natural Wonders of the World using nothing but Lumia smartphones. He has been to the Grand Canyon, the harbor of Rio De Janeiro, Mount Everest and Victoria Falls. In the latest installment of his assignment, he went to Mexico to photograph the Paricutin volcano and the Mexican Ring of Fire.
The images he has produced using the Lumia phones are breathtakingly beautiful and the stories he has brought back from the journey are amazing.
