Snow Cavern by stuckinparadise Kerlingarfjöll, Central highlands of Iceland

Our bold and determined trip leader Johnathan ventured into this hole and then called us for this unique opportunity.

In order to get in, we had to climb up the stream. To keep my boots dry, I removed them and braved the freezing water wearing a pair of flip flops. Once inside it didn’t take long before my toes started to turn numb and couldn’t stay very long. I took a few fast and unconvincing shots and left quickly. Once outside I convinced myself that I would never have the chance to experience a place like this again and should go back. The second time in was much better as I knew what to expect and had a better idea of what kind of exposure setting I would need.

I have chosen to post the vertical version to show a bit more of the stream and the depth of the cavern. The shiny dome is the effect of day light penetrating the translucent ice cap. Why does it show a green hue? I was told it may be due to trapped bacterial activity in the ice though I am not so sure. http://flic.kr/p/deTs32
