The waterfall is surrounded by dark lava columns, which gave rise to its name. The park encompasses all of Vatnajökull glaciers and extensive surrounding areas. Vatnajökull is characterised by many high, majestic mountain ridges, with outlet glaciers descending between them onto the lowlands and the central volcano Öræfajökull and Iceland’s highest peak, Hvannadalshnjúkur.
