White Pocket by PaulRojas This was from my recent trip with D Breezy, where we hit Valley of Fire, Toroweap, and White Pocket in a single weekend to take advantage of the monsoon conditions and catch some dramatic weather.
This shot was at White Pocket, right before an afternoon storm hit us. We were just going about our business, taking shots at a leisurely pace, when the wind suddenly picked up. It blasted my face full of sand and I knew then that I had only a few minutes before the rain fell.
I knew I wanted to take a shot from this area that I had scouted earlier, but I was standing all the way on top of the brain rock in the background, so I had to run as fast as I could to make it in time. I was unfolding my tripod on the go, and cursing out loud at the raindrops that were starting to fall. When I finally climbed up to this spot, I was completely out of breath.
I saw David out near the top of the butte in the back, and he yelled down at me something about the sun casting some serious glow on a butte to my left. I knew I was out of time by then, so I just acknowledged him, knowing that he was probably shooting another masterpiece.
Rain was falling everywhere by then, so I just dropped the tripod where I stood, composed as best as I could, took two shots, and packed up as fast as possible. The downpour hit just seconds after, and we found ourselves soaking wet and shivering under a small tree for the next hour.
