Some Vezo women in Madagascar still use a traditional face paint made out of a bark of a tree. It is believed to improve the quality of the skin and protect against the sun. The Vezo are semi-nomadic coastal people that rely entirely on fishing at sea. The past 2000 years they have been navigating the stretch of the Indian Ocean that separates Madagascar from the African continent in their hand-carved pirogues and they still do it nowadays.
