When I was 17 and in desperate need of turning my life around I made a list of 5 places to inspire me. I knew nothing about the world and at the time reaching these destinations seemed impossible. It would take me 5 years from this point to get on my first plane, and 3 more to visit the first place on the list. Now, 12 years after writing it, I finally reached the second: “Petra at Night.” Although I’ve dedicated my life to traveling since then and visited many astonishing places, I still can’t describe how amazing it felt walking through the canyon illuminated by candlelight to lay my eyes on something I obsessed over an image of for years. It was just as I imagined it: breathtaking.
