Tea-pickers of Gunung Mas by 500V4 by 500V4

To start with, this hill is a lot steeper than it looks and surprisingly when walking up the slippery footpaths there are large light blue crabs with menacing white claws snapping away at every level. Not ideal in flip-flops! These ladies all wear high rubber boots for a reason and not just for crabs. One of them found my lens cap that rolled down the hill and graciously offered to sell it back to me for $2.00, a deal I happily accepted. The sun in this photo is just coming over the top of one of the hills and filling the wooded tea plantation valley with lights and shadows. The hats are made of bamboo and covered with silk cloth to provide an umbrella-like protection from the hammering sun. The most difficult part in taking this photo was getting the extremely chatty and smiley ladies not to look at the camera. They all wanted to pose, smile and wave and I certainly didn’t want to hurt their feelings by telling them that I only planned on taking photos of the backs of their heads.
