The most typical feature of the whole central highland is the terraces that succeed each other in rather small ribbons up to the very top of the mountains. To build those terraces that look like big steps leading to the highest mountain peaks many generations have laboured. It is known from records that Oueen Arwa, who lived in the 11th century, spent an entire yearly budget to help farmers restore and expand terraces. The several metre high stone walls, protecting the precious soil from being washed away during the rainy months, need to be maintained constantly.Unfortunately many terraces have already been abandoned because the effort to cultivate does not always equal the yield. Peeks rise to an altitude of 3700m Outstretched basins in the highlands are completely surrounded by mountains…
