Vranov nad Dyjí is a market town on the Dyje (Thaya) river in 3 km north of the Austrian border. While there exists a written record about a castle at Vranov location dated in 1100, the nearby settlement was first mentioned as a village as late as in 1323. The Lichtenburg noble family took control of the castle and town during the 15th century, followed by the Althann nobles. Between 1687 and 1695 a grand oval hall was built, known as ‘the Hall of the Ancestors’, it became a dominant feature of Vranov. To complement the Hall of the Ancestors with a spiritual element, the Chapel of the Holy Trinity was built. It was richly decorated and incorporated an Althann family vault. In the 18th centuties more grand buildings were constructed, completing the transformation of the original castle complex into an up-to-date Baroque chateau.
