5 Easy Ways To Feel More Energized At Work

If you need help on how to get more energized for work, read on.

This is the story of my most embarrassing moment at work.

I’m sitting in a toilet cubical and I can barely keep my eyes open. Before I know it, I have the cleaner knocking on the door, asking me if everything was okay.

I’d been in there for 30 minutes but had no idea because I’d fallen asleep.

I was so ashamed. It was only 10am and I’d been at work for just an hour!

This might sound like an extreme example of tiredness but I’m sure you can relate to it. That feeling of having no energy, always feeling tired and all you want to do is go home to bed. Then, when you get home, you end up staying up late anyway.

I decided I needed to do something about it. I didn’t want to be that guy sleeping in the toilets at work anymore so I started exploring how to boost my energy levels.

That’s when I discovered these tips. If you apply these to your lifestyle, you will be ready to take on whatever work throws at you.

Tips on how to get more energized:

1. Go to bed earlier and wake up earlier

wake up earlier

It is so easy to watch that extra episode of your favourite box set when you know you should be going to sleep. You know that going to bed early would be the best idea but you just can’t bring yourself to turn it off.

This is because we have entered a gratification cycle. By going on social media sites, we are getting what’s known as dopamine hits. This is from consuming short bursts of content. This makes it harder for us to put down that technology.

The blue light found in these devices also suppresses melatonin, a hormone that helps control our sleep and wake cycles. Our cortisol hormone levels then increase, which make it harder for us to get to sleep.

As a result, in the morning, you find yourself pressing snooze because you’ve only had 6 hours sleep or less. Well, don’t give in to temptation.

By going to sleep and getting up at the same time each day, you are setting your body’s internal clock. This can increase your sleep quality and therefore make you feel less tired the next day.

It is important to stick to this routine on the weekend too if you can. Otherwise, you get that dreaded Monday morning feeling when your alarm goes off.

If you want a little more help getting up at the right time each day, download a free sleep cycle alarm clock on your mobile phone via iTunes or Google Play. These apps track your sleep patterns and wake you up during your lightest sleep. This is a natural way of waking up and feeling rested without the use of an alarm clock.

The best way to find out how much sleep you need each night is by experimenting. Try going to bed a little earlier each night until you feel well rested. If you happen to wake up early with less than an hour and a half before you need to get up, make sure you get up. This is so that you’re not entering a new sleep cycle. If yo don’t do this, the sleep cycle will only be half completed, causing you to feel more tired when your alarm goes off.

2. Eat breakfast

Out of all our meals, breakfast is the most important. We can’t count the number of times we’ve heard this or been told this. But it’s true. Breakfast increases your energy levels. For example, oats are great for slow release energy. They will stop you getting hungry sooner as hunger can cause us to feel tired.

Slow release energy is important because if we opt for food that are high in sugar, such as cakes or pastries, we will release sugar quickly into our bloodstream. This can cause insulin spikes that can create energy highs but also energy crashes.

By having breakfast, you are breaking the fast. So if you choose to skip this meal, you are running on empty.

Breakfast also provides us with a lot of nutrients like calcium, iron, protein and fibre. These are nutrients we might not get in other meals during the day.

Breakfast also restores our blood glucose level back to normal after our overnight fast. We usually skip breakfast because we don’t have time in the morning. But if you follow tip 1 then you should have plenty of time in the morning to sit down with a bowl of porridge. (I like mine with honey).

According to Mayo Clinic, when we eat a good and hearty breakfast, it refuels the body and restocks it with glycogen stores that supply us with immediate energy. When we skip breakfast, it results in decreased physical activity and performance.

3. Drink more water and drink less caffeine

Now this is a difficult one if you are surrounded by coffee at work and absolutely love it.
It might seem like coffee is keeping your energy levels up in the day but when it comes to going to sleep at night, you may find your mind is still buzzing.

This will result in another late night causing you to wake up feeling so tired you have to drink two more cups of coffee before 10am. And then the cycle repeats itself… Don’t let this be you.

Caffeine can stay in our system for up to 6 hours. To make sure this doesn’t affect your sleep, make sure you don’t have any after 2pm.

It might make us feel like we have energy, but once the adrenaline of drinking the coffee wears off, you can end up feeling tired and irritable. Sometimes it can result in a headache due to dehydration.

The best way to get rid of relying on it is to not have it. If this is just unavoidable try a decaf option instead.

By drinking more water, we are keeping our body hydrated which will also give us more energy. Dehydration can affect your attention span. If we are dehydrated our brain has to work extra hard.
It can also increase tiredness so it is important to drink about 8 glasses of water a day.

4. Start your day outside

start your day outside

It can be hard to get any natural sunlight when you are stuck at a desk all day. But the lack of sun exposure can make us feel tired and lethargic. That’s why it is important to try and start your day with some sun exposure.

Try going for a quick walk or even walk to work if it is possible. Sun exposure reminds our brain that it is daytime and encourages the release of cortisol. This hormone is controlled by our internal clock called the circadian rhythm.

Shawn Stevenson (creator of the Shawn Stevenson Model blog ‘) says “sunlight in the morning can lower cortisol levels in the evening, which will help us have a better night’s sleep.

If you can start your day with a walk instead of a cup of coffee, you will soon be flying.

5. Add exercise into your routine

Now if you are able to run or walk to work, then you are already on a great path to increasing your energy levels.

Exercise is not only brilliant in helping you sleep better at night but it is also great at calming the mind and making you feel motivated and focused. These are two key tools for a productive day at work.

In the online magazine, Psychology Today, Michael J. Breus, Ph.D. writes how exercise has multiple benefits for the body including lifting mood, reducing stress and anxiety, improving circadian rhythms, promoting alertness during the day and improving sleep at night.

If you can try and schedule just 30 minutes of exercise a day then that is a good amount. This could be a mixture of walking, running or taking the stairs instead of the lifts at work.

I have so much more energy now that I am far more productive at work and as a result rarely get stressed. Sleeping in work toilets is absolutely a thing of the past.

From the architect. Self-sufficient living and building with natural materials may sound like hippie seventies stuff, however this small house manages to combine sustainability with sleek design. Walden Studio mounted this 17 square meter house on a trailer for Marjolein Jonker in the Netherlands. The compact size of the house led to a multi-functional design, which makes it not just a house with an interior, instead the interior is part of the design as a whole.

You enter the house through the front door, made up of two large windows. Once inside you can nest yourself in the corner couch, which accommodates storage space and can also be transformed into a dining table that seats four. In the middle of the house you’ll find a kitchen, the stairs and a desk. The stairs functions as a closet and offers space for the refrigerator. In case you think living smaller equals sobriety, think again! In the bathroom, you can sit back and enjoy a panoramic view while bathing, now that is some small scale luxury.

Probably the most defining feature of the house is the big amount of daylight entering the house, thanks to the four roof lights. Despite the constraints of a small sized house, it feels spacious and transparent. This effect is further strengthened by the use of light materials, a white finish for the walls combined with birch plywood.

The house is inspired by the tiny house movement. Living small generates more freedom; there is less junk in your house, you have to clean less and you don’t have to worry about a high mortgage since the average price is a fifth of a ‘’normal’’ house. Furthermore, living smaller means using less energy. In this house, a small wood stove can easily heat the entire home and the roof is fitted with three big solar panels that produce the required electricity. In the bathroom a composting toilet has been placed to reduce water usage and create compost. The house will also harvest its own rainwater and take care of waste water with a natural wastewater treatment system.

The ecological impact is reduced even further by using bio-based materials. To give some examples, the facade is made out of thermally modified pine wood from Scandinavia, treated naturally to last as long as a tropical hard wood. The construction consists of spruce wood studs and Ecoboard, a sheet material made of agricultural waste products, which has been painted with ecological paint. The floor is made of cork and to keep Marjolein warm during the Dutch winters, the house is insulated with a layer of sheep wool.

Marjoleins house is the first tiny house to be legally placed by a municipality in the Netherlands. For now it’s a temporary permit, but the local government is excited about a more sustainable form of living. Of course that will only come into being by real world experiments, such as these.

6 Reasons Why We Leave Our Partners

Dear John; I love you, good bye. Dear Sally; you’re a good mom to our kids but it’s time for me to move on, good bye.

Ouch. No one wants to get this letter (especially not Sally/John). It’s the I’m leaving you letter. It sucks and can often be devastating. Very devastating. We want to make sense of this. Where did you go wrong? What happened? What on earth did you miss? You were sure things were going very well. She seemed happy. What the hell is the matter with her?

So many questions and, yes, there are answers to all of these. Not the ones you are expecting though. Many people who write their goodbye letters aren’t spilling the whole truth. In conversation later, they will assure you that it’s not you, it’s them. Only part of that is true.

Here are some other reasons we leave our partners and that we really don’t want to confess to.

sociopath1. You really don’t turn me on anymore.

Really. Who wants to actually admit to this anyway. You can’t possibly tell your partner this because it would truly hurt their fee lings. So you come up with other excuses all of which have nothing to do with sex or attraction, whatsoever. Plain and simple, you want sex and intimacy, just not with them anymore. And that’s ok.

2. You’re really not who you say you are.

This person is the modern day version of Jekyll and Hyde. When they are good, they are awesome, when they are bad you hide (pardon the pun) in the closet. This person is a lunatic and you simply didn’t see it at first. Most of us don’t show our true personalities until well past the first impression/honeymoon phase. You tell them, it’s just not working, pack your toothbrush and run home.

3. Can I have your attention please?

Can you just please put the book/remote control/your iPad or iPhone down for one minute and give me some attention please? Let’s face it. We all want some attention to a degree. We don’t necessarily be attached to your hip 24/7 but we, at the very least, would like to acknowledged in some way shape or form. Do you even know I’m here? Attention sometimes mean affection. We require a little bit of it. It really is nice to have. If you aren’t giving us enough, we’re packing it in. I mean, if the butcher is showing me more attention than you, and I’m loving it, then there’s a problem.

4. Another family gathering?

I really don’t like your family. I can’t tell you that. Not only would it be rude, it’s also mean and hurtful. That’s your family and you love them. You want to hang with them every weekend and that’s great. I don’t and I really don’t like them. I also don’t like half your friends. Whenever you tell me we’re going to so and so’s house, again, I want to cringe. I can’t do it anymore.

5. I really don’t like you.

When we first hooked up you really were a fun person and it seemed like we had a lot in common. Fact is, you’re a bit of an arse and I really don’t like your personality. I like to be positive and upbeat, you judge everyone at the drop of a dime and always have something to complain about. You just aren’t a nice person or not a nice person for me. Everything you believe in and talk about challenges and goes against all the things I value and believe in. How I did not see this in the beginning is beyond me.

6. Time to fly.

I told you I wanted to travel and go see places. You said, yes sure. One year later you are telling me no. We can watch the discovery channel together or take little road trips. It seems I am more free spirited than I originally thought I was, and you are just a liar. You assured me that travel would happen and now you are telling me no. What else have you lied about? Actually, I really just don’t believe anything you tell me anymore. I think you might even be a compulsive liar. I can’t tell you that though. You won’t agree and will lie to make me believe something else.

Some of these things are simply hurtful and having to come out with the absolute truth almost makes us look evil and insensitive. So we put a Band-Aid on our separation and say: no, it’s really me, it’s not you. And we leave and we’re free from you. Obviously there are a million reasons why we leave partners, it’s just that sometimes making up a reason why we’re leaving is easier and nicer than speaking the honest to God truth.

Video: Ascend the Ziggurat in the Nordic Pavilion at the 2016 Venice Biennale

In this film, Jesús Granada visits the Nordic Pavilion, “In Therapy”, at the 2016 Venice Biennale. The video presents a series of measured stills in 4K resolution which introduce the central installation of the exhibition—a stepped pyramid, or ziggurat—and its series of reflective “rooms without walls.” The pavilion itself, which was completed in 1969, was designed by Sverre Fehn to partially reflect and concretize certain ideas about Nordic society and its architecture – including a sense of openness. This year, therefore, the pavilion has been orchestrated as an extension of the public space of the Giardini.

According to curators David Basulto and James Taylor-Foster, “In Therapy is a mirror: a collection of installations which presents the breadth of contemporary Nordic architecture, assembled under one roof, to provide an informed framework for discussion and proposition. It positions FinlandNorway and Sweden—three countries with distinct histories, cultures and attitudes to design—face to face in the context of the compressed world of the Giardini, interrogating perceptions and preconceptions of Nordic architecture by openly addressing its built manifestation head on.”

This video is part of a partnership between ArchDaily and the Spanish photographer Jesús Granada. These videos have been filmed in 4K, a level of quality that allows viewers to perceive details that don’t come across in standard video formats. Granada’s stock images of the Biennale can be obtained on his website, here; ArchDaily’s complete coverage of the 2016 Biennale can be found here.
