Ahead of this weekend’s symposium “THE DEBATE”—which will take place in Kotor, Montenegro and will present the results of the Project Solana Ulcinj for the national and international audience of the KotorAPSS (Kotor Architectural Prison Summer School)—we present an interview with Bart Lootsma, co-curator of the Montenegro Pavilion at the 2016 Venice Architecture Biennale.
The exhibition “Project Solana Ulcinj,” co-curated by Lootsma and Katharina Weinberger and commissioned by Dijana Vucinic and the Ministry of Sustainable Development and Tourism, features four proposals for the re-use/re-purposing/re-programming of a former industrial site in Montenegro. With an eye on not only sustainability, but also natural and economic viability, four firms proposed different spatial strategies to transform what Lootsma calls an “unreal man-made artificial and abstract landscape.”
Lootsma explains: “What we do is make alternative plans that are neither completely preservationist and also do not propose to build huge hotels on the site, but open up different opportunities for sustainable projects—sustainable projects in terms of nature and economy.”
“What I want visitors to take away is to realize that on the one hand, nature is not something that is opposed to culture or technology, but actually technology and culture are part of nature,” he continued.

Jealousy. The ugly green monster. The animal that no one wants to talk about, but everyone knows is present. It’s like the elephant in the room. Don’t look at it, don’t talk to it, just ignore it and maybe, just maybe it will go away.
But it doesn’t. It sits in the corner. It taunts you. You wish it would disappear and never come back. The way it makes you feel is just plain old shitty. Who invited it here this time? Was it an ex co-worker, a friend, your spouse, the neighbour? You know exactly who invited it in. You did. Without even knowing or realizing it, you opened that door and he snuck in. The question now is; how do we get rid of him? The answers will surprise you; it’s not as hard as you think.
Below are 5 simple ways to deal with jealousy next time it shows up.
If you think someone is smarter than you, you’re wrong. We are all super smart at very different things. Someone who is stellar in geography might be really horrible in science. It doesn’t make them smarter or better, they just know something different. Don’t think that someone is better than you at baking pies just because you can’t bake good pies. Maybe you make a mean chicken loaf. Who knows? It doesn’t matter. What matters is that we are all gifted with amazing qualities and skills. Acknowledge yours.
Exactly the way you are. You are smart enough, good enough , beautiful enough, funny enough, you get the idea. Whatever you have to offer your family, friends or the world, is exactly enough. What you offer, no one else can because no one is you. Your offerings are unique to you and it is enough for someone.
If you ever thought you weren’t beautiful enough, there is another person who looks at you and thinks you are absolutely gorgeous. If you think you aren’t interesting, there is a person out there who hangs on every word you say an d gets what you’re talking about. They love listening to you and you may even be inspiring them. If you have any insecurities about any part of you, remember that someone somewhere adores you.
The best way to deal with the ugly green monster may very well be to talk it out with the person you are feeling this jealousy towards. This will be easy if it’s a friend, family member or maybe even a co-worker. Talking things out is always number one on the list of tips of tricks to deal with a negative situation. When you talk to the person you are feeling jealous towards they may give you a totally different perspective, one you never thought about, and your jealousy will quickly dissipate.
Whenever you have any sort of toxic or negative energy buried inside of you, the first thing you should do is look at ways to release it. Whether it be talk to somebody about it, talk to yourself about it or maybe even journal about it. Whichever method you choose, you definitely need to look at ways to get rid of it instead of it sitting and stewing in your heart, mind and soul and wreaking havoc.
Holding on to any kind of toxicity does you no good. The only person you are harming is yourself. It is of the utmost importance to figure out ways to release toxic energy as soon as it appears. Find out where it’s coming from, deal with it and let it go. It may not be easy, bu t it is certainly not impossible and absolutely necessary. We are here to live a life of joy, not misery.

Rolling coverage of all the day’s political developments as they happen, including Theresa May and Jeremy Corbyn opening the Commons debate on Trident renewal and Angela Eagle and Owen Smith at the PLP hustings
9.10am BST
Good morning. Theresa May is going to make her first appearance in the Commons today as prime minister and she will be opening the debate on renewing Trident. There is no reason why the prime minister has to open this debate – it would have been perfectly acceptable to leave it up to the defence secretary – and arguably there is no reason why the debate is needed anyway, because the Commons has already voted in principle to renew the Trident nuclear deterrent. But David Cameron scheduled a vote in large part because he wanted to highlight Labour divisions on this subject and May is implementing this strategy with relish. In comments from her speech released overnight, she accuses Jeremy Corbyn of “misplaced idealism”. She says:
We cannot compromise on our national security. We cannot outsource the grave responsibility we shoulder for keeping our people safe. And we cannot abandon our ultimate safeguard out of misplaced idealism. That would be a reckless gamble: a gamble that would enfeeble our allies and embolden our enemies. A gamble with the safety and security of families in Britain that we must never be prepared to take.

London fashion store Hostem has launched its first guesthouse – a refurbished Georgian house with furniture from Pierre Jeanneret, Faye Toogood and Max Lamb, and accessories that guests can buy (+ slideshow). (more…)
From the architect. House P is a holiday home for a family of seven from Hamburg. The house takes ques from traditional Allgäu architecture, but results in a unique, contemporary building.
House P’s geometry was generated by maximizing the property’s allowable building envelope, a classic Allgäu House with a shallow gabled roof and a full lower level, and then slicing an oblique section from that volume along its center axis. From one building emerge two: a house and a storage shed. The space between offers the family a protected courtyard for outdoor activities. The resulting slanted rear facade together with a cantilevering stair in turn allow one to reach the main entrance on dry ground. The building’s canted shape also results in an impressive and generous interior space. In the main living room, a large picture window offers majestic views of the surrounding mountains. The upper and lower floors are linked by a double-height living and dining room with a gallery. A fireplace provides comfort and warmth. A loft at the upper level invites one to relax, read or star-gaze through windows positioned to afford direct views of the sky. The basement offers an additional place to retreat with two private bedrooms, a bath and a sauna.
Wood, a regional building material, comprises both the building’s main construction and facade. The facade’s timber shell is charred before assembly. This gives wood a natural and environmentally friendly weather protection and the house its unusual black appearance. Core-insulated exposed concrete at the house’s lower level contrasts the wood. It provides a solid plinth for the timber house above.
