We didn’t get perfect ice bubbles, but we got something different. There was a few days temperature jumping up and down around 32F before our trip. The ice surface of the lake melted, blown by the wind, and then refroze. Hence we got such an interesting texture as foreground.

Unbelievable colors, unlike anything I’d seen before, made up one of the strangest landscapes in the world in the Danakil Depression. These lakes contain sulfuric acid, so care is needed while shooting them, but nonetheless they are a pleasure to shoot and watch. We’ll spend 4 days in the Danakil shooting a variety of volcanic landscapes including a close encounter with an active volcano on my ‘Earth, Wind and Fire ‘ Ethiopia photo workshop.
