You can barely see it but I’m holding my fly rod in this pic. One of my photography goals this year is to take some fly fishing pictures this year. I went out and was casting in this river while my camera was taking photos every second. I’m trying to figure out which type of cast looks the best. Also I’m trying to find out which situations make the fishing line stand out while it’s in the air. Is it a darker background with a light colored line or the opposite? I guess I’ll find out this year. I didn’t care for those photographs so I’ll keep practicing.
Anyways, here’s shot from Abiqua Falls near Silverton, Oregon. Abiqua Falls has one of the best approaches I’ve experienced. (I mean assuming you don’t fall down the mountain like I did… I took the wrong trail.) It isn’t until you come around the big cliff walls that you can see the falls. It’s pretty incredible. You can hear it from so far away too, which just adds to the anticipation. It’s not like Silver Falls (another waterfall in the area) which basically has a parking lot attached to it. This waterfall has a much more remote feeling to it.

This photograph is comprised of two horizontal photos vertically stacked for a really wide angle. I also used a 5 stop ND filter for the waterfalls and the little stream.

A particularly glorious evening near the summit of Mt. Seymour. One advantage to living in Vancouver is that we have quick access to the local mountains.

On this evening it was raining in the city so I was in no rush to hike on up. As I reached the half way point I could see that it was clear above. I put my ski poles and legs in to high gear and made it to the summit in record time long enough to take a few shots before the soft light was gone.

Last week I rediscovered this amazing Blue Mountains canyon. I’d not been through it for a couple of years and the sheer beauty was mesmerising.

Even the best photographs cannot capture the true nature of this place and the bombardment of your senses as you travel through the canyon – the changes from peaceful silence to what sounds like a raging torrent created by the sound of the smallest waterfall reverberating off the canyon walls, the transition from bright open sections to dark tunnels with only the light from glow worms piercing the darkness, the swirls of moisture as you breathe out into rays of sunlight piercing through the canopy above, the slowly rising steam off your warming wetsuit and the beads of water dripping off the canyon walls. All of this is exacerbated ten-fold when you’re hyper-sensitive due to the potential for snakes hiding in the rocks beneath your feet. The slightest scurry or movement in the corner of your eye stops you in your tracks until you realise it’s just a goanna or yabby.

I can only imagine the range of emotions the first explorers must have experienced passing through this canyon in the 1960s. The canyon would have been very similar to today but they would not have known whether there were impenetrable obstructions or sudden drops with no natural boulders or logs to fix their ropes to. Once you have started going down these canyons, often the only way is down until the canyon opens out.

Accessing this canyon requires specialist equipment, skills and experience in abseiling, canyoning and wilderness navigation. Specialist canyoning guiding companies operate in the Blue Mountains.

This is a four-exposure photo to accurately capture the huge dynamic range and to ensure foreground to background focus. Shot with a Sony A7R with Sony-Zeiss 16-35mm f4 lens @ 16mm and f/8, 1/3 – 1/25s, ISO100-200.

Mount Cook – New Zealand
This is an image of Mt Cook reflected in a small opening of the frozen over Hooker Lake in Aoraki/Mount Cook National Park on the South Island of New Zealand.
The image has been flipped 180 degrees to give it an abstract appearance, almost like looking out of an ice cave at the peak of Mount Cook.
I hope you enjoy it.
