I am really excited to show you all this new photo. What you are seeing is a vertical panorama of moonset through the famous Pfeiffer Beach archway in Big Sur. The moon was fairly dim during this phase giving slight visibility to the Milky Way overhead. As the moon dipped down closer to the horizon the Galaxy became visible enough to even see some subtle nebula colors. The panorama consists of about 5 shots overlapping starting from almost completely overhead all the way facing down at some rocks near the tripod legs.

I had been wanting a Pfeiffer Beach shot for awhile and I was just sitting at home one day when my buddy Justin Majeczky mentioned to me that it may be the last time to head out and see the moonlight shining through with the Milky Way. So I met up with my friend Jim Patterson and we drove out to see this awesome sight. It was pretty incredible to see the glow from the moon backlighting the waves crashing through the arch. The long exposure makes the water look very calm, however in reality it was very active and I was a little nervous about a rogue wave sneaking up. It was very hard to see much besides the moonlight glow in person.

The central group of the Azores captured from southern coast of São Jorge round about 140 m above sea level in the Bay of Arraia. The foreground shows the typical grazing areas of the Azores, separated by walls made of lava rocks. The background boasts the island of Pico. The stratovolcano, which gave the name for the whole island, is with 2,351 m the highest mountain of Portugal. The sea between São Jorge and Pico is approximately 20 km broad.

Sub-zero temperatures are rare anywhere, but we are lucky to have a few days of wicked cold weather here in Maine to create these very dramatic conditions. I have tried to avoid photographing this peak lately as I already have a few images that I am quite happy with from here. However, I know I will keep coming back, because this peak just sucks you in. There is no escaping it. It is almost mind boggling that such a feature exists in this landscape of extremes. I went to this location with a completely different mindset, one where I would refrain from choosing to photograph my favorite peak. It was just there, like that little devil on your shoulder saying “hey, you know you want to”. When I scrambled up to this small podium like hill I was stunned to see this beautiful panorama of the desert (think of the last two images). At the top of this small space was this tiny barrel cactus, staring right at the peak. It was like it was supposed to happen. It also didn’t hurt that there were some clouds in the sky and they were starting to catch the last light of day. So there I was, photographing the peak which has been such a special place for me the last few years.
