Florida Is Getting a 450-Foot Hard Rock Hotel Shaped Like a Giant Guitar

Seminole Hard Rock Hotel & Casino - Guitar Hotel

Preparations are underway for what will be the largest guitar shaped hotel at Florida’s Seminole Hard Rock Hotel and Casino. The plans were unveiled to great fanfare, with fireworks and guitar smashing to celebrate what the hoteliers have fought for since 2007. The new 638-room hotel will be a spectacle of Hollywood, Florida, as the building curves up to form the body of a guitar.

Designed to appear as two back-to-back guitars, the structure will measure 450 feet high when complete and will also boast a 41,000-square-foot spa complex for guests to enjoy. The bold design is the vision of  James F. Allen, CEO of Seminole Gaming and Chairman of Hard Rock International. “I said, ‘We are talking about a building that is actually shaped like a guitar,’ ” Allen shared at a preview event. “This is another time in my life when people thought I was certifiably crazy.”

But now, his vision is becoming a reality. “We think the architectural design in itself creates an amazing attraction,” he said. “There is truly, with zero exaggeration, nothing like it in the world.”

Due to open in 2019—at a cost of $1.5 billion—the expansion will double the rooms at the hotel and gaming space at the casino. In addition to enjoying their stay in the guitar-shaped building, guests will also be able to spend time in a new 10-acre pool complex that is part of the project. It will include private cabanas, butler service, multiple waterfalls, and water sports. As the spectacle unfolds, Allen hopes to be able to attract large-scale productions to the Seminole Hard Rock, making it an international entertainment destination.

Artists Hand-Blow Molten Glass into Fallen Trees to Create Beautiful Sculptures

Amazing Glass Blowing Art Molten Glass and Wood Sculpture

Artists Scott Slagerman and Jim Fishman create objects of beauty from molten glass and fallen trees. Working together, the two have sculpted abstract forms that combine warm woods with cheerful translucent tones. In each of the pieces, the remnants of the tree act as an unconventional vase for the glass, and it fits perfectly within the U-shaped crevice. It’s as if the two disparate materials occur naturally.

Slagerman and Fishman call the collection Wood & Glass, but don’t let the simplicity of the title fool you; the pieces require an extensive knowledge of both woodworking and glass blowing. To produce one sculpture, the design is first drawn on the wood and then the center is extracted from it. Afterwards, molten glass is blown into the empty space and hugs its curves.

Slagerman specializes in glass fabrication and is responsible for the dazzling colors of Wood & Glass. He writes that the very nature of glass is what captivated him years ago. “How it [glass] is transformed from a fragile, yet unyielding solid state to molten fluidity and back again,” he writes, “and how this mutable substance, through a process that is both delicate and dangerous, can create objects both essential and esoteric.”

Fusing molten glass blowing and woodworking, Scott Slagerman and Jim Fishman create abstract forms that look like they are naturally occurring.

How to Take a Class From Harvard—and Over 800 Other Universities—for Free

free online classes MOOCS

Photo: Dai KE

Ever wish you’d had time to take that interesting class at university, but could never fit it into your schedule? Or, perhaps you’re simply a curious individual who loves learning. The rise of MOOCS—massive open online courses—is a great place to get university-level learning from the comfort of home. And best of all, it’s free.

MOOCS became especially popular about 5 years ago, following the trend of open access of information that’s seen institutions like the Library of Congress or Metropolitan Museum of Art place more and more of their resources online. During that time, more than 800 universities—including Harvard and Stanford—have placed over 8,000 free classes online, giving you access to a world-class education in a huge range of subject matters. And as most are self-paced, you can take your time and work the classes into your busy schedule.

To help you wade through the choices, the online database Class Central lets you sort by subject and university and compiles lists of new and trending courses. Fresh content is always being added, with universities continually releasing new classes. In fact, in the past three months alone, 200 universities around the world have released 560 free courses online. Let’s take a look at some favorites for creatives and art lovers from this new crop of free classes.

Interview: Up and Coming Wildlife Photographer Captures the Spirit of the Natural World

Richard Johnston Lion Wildlife Photography

Established in 2016, Lonely Hunter is the creative outlet for freelance photographer Richard Johnston. Primarily focusing on landscape and wildlife photography, the Australian photographer has been making a name for himself with his well composed, artistic images. Whether getting in close for an intimate animal portrait or zooming out to show man in the context of nature, his storytelling ability has garnered him attention from several well-known photography competitions.

In 2016, Johnston won Canon Australia’s Light Awards in the Full Frame category for his moody image of a brewing ocean storm. Winning the grand prize got him a trip for two to East Africa, where he was able to expand his repertoire and shoot incredible imagery of elephants, lions, and more in the wild. And now, his photo of an oryx dashing across sand dunes was singled out as a week 7 editor’s favorite in the 2017 National Geographic Nature Photographer of the Year competition.

We had a chance to chat with the up and coming nature photographer about how he got his start, his inspirational trip to Africa, and what we can expect from him in the future. Read on for our exclusive interview.

Richard Johnston Wildlife Photography Elephant

What got you started in photography?
For as long as I can remember, I have always had a fascination for cameras. Growing up, I feel as though I was influenced by my old man, who was a camera operator himself, but in recent years I have come to realize that the reason I have continued to pursue photography is because it gives me the ability to be creative and share my work with others.

Richard Johnston Wildlife Photography

Where did the name “Lonely Hunter” come from?
I was cruising down the freeway in my car after picking up my first framed print. I was pretty happy with how it turned out and it was one of the first moments I actually felt like I could make a career out of this. While listening to music as I drove along, I started thinking about some potential business names, and just happened to look down at the name of the song which was playing—Lonely Hunter by Foals. Straight away I felt connected to it, as it reflects my situation when I’m in the field. More often than not I’m by myself, which is where the first part ‘Lonely’ comes in, and I’m always looking for those special moments/compositions, which is where the second word ‘Hunter’ fits nicely.

What draws you particularly to nature and wildlife photography?
I have always found it hard trying to select an area of photography to focus on because I find it all so interesting. But I do particularly enjoy nature and wildlife photography because I love being outdoors in the environment.

Richard Johnston landscape photography

Photo contests are obviously a great way to get your work out there. How do you go about selecting what work to submit?
It depends on the contest really—every contest has different judges and different criteria for selecting its winners. Majority of the time, I’ll look back over past work to see which images fit the brief, and from there I would select the images which I feel stand out from the rest.

How would you say your trip to Africa inspired you as a photographer?
It was inspiring because normally I look at these places in books and magazines, but we were there seeing it firsthand. Everywhere you looked there was something which demanded your attention, whether it was the landscape, wildlife, or the people, Africa had it all!

Richard Johnston Kenya travel photography

What was your favorite experience while on that particular trip?
It’s hard to pick a favorite moment because there were so many, but if I were to select only one, it probably would have been when we got caught in the middle of large wildebeest river crossing.

Situated in front of our camp was a small section of the Mara river, an area which frequently sees large wildebeest crossings. One morning, we woke to find a large and building herd standing on the edge of the banks waiting for one to work up enough courage to lead the rest across the crocodile and hippo infested waters. With the protection of some local Maasai Warriors, we waited patiently for one to start crossing before running down to the opposite river bank to photograph the event. With so many trying to cross, the river began sweeping the animals slightly downstream to where we were standing and before we knew it, we had wildebeest running up each side of the bank next to us. It was a pretty incredible experience and something I’ll never forget.

It’s easy to get complacent and forget that you are actually in the wild, and I guess that event really reinforced the fact you always need to be careful.

Richard Johnston Wildlife Photography

What do you hope to show in your images?
I always aim to capture an image which looks visually appealing and showcases the true spirit of my subject.

What’s your go-to gear setup when out in the field?
I always shoot with my Canon 1DX Mark II body but it’s hard to select a go-to setup when it comes to lenses as it will always vary depending on the situation and what you’re trying to create. If I’m shooting wildlife, more often than not I’ll use a lens with a long focal length which helps me get close enough to the animals without disturbing them. But if I’m shooting landscapes on the other hand, in most situations I’ll probably be using a wide angle lens which helps to fit more of the landscape in the picture.

Wave photograph Richard Johnston

If you could go anywhere in the world on your next shoot, where would it be and why?
I would really like to visit Antarctica because of its remoteness. Photographing ice sculpture filled landscapes and diverse wildlife would be incredible, to say the least!

Any upcoming projects you’d like to share?
As a matter of fact yes, I’m heading to the U.S. early next year to work on a new range of prints so you’ll have to keep an eye on my website for that…

New Large-Scale Finger Paintings of Vibrant Animals in Action by Iris Scott

We often think of finger painting as something that’s just for children, but Iris Scott has continually shown us that it’s a viable way to produce stunning works of art. For years, the Brooklyn-based creative has broken the barrier between herself and the canvas by creating elaborate, colorful paintings using her hand in place of a brush.

Scott isn’t afraid to get her hands dirty with art, but she wears a pair of gloves to move the paint around. (This also keeps her fingernails clean!) After suiting up, she treats the pigment like clay and layers thick applications of it on canvas. The result is a jubilant subject matter that’s depicted in a rainbow palette. Together, they highlight the simpler side of life that’s best seen in her ongoing series called Shakin’ Dogs. In this collection, Scott paints canines that are drying off after a jaunt in the water. They radiate pure joy that’s sure to make you smile.

While Scott’s finger painting airs on the unconventional side, she’s not shy about sharing her technique with others. Her book, Finger Painting Weekend Workshop, invites anyone to try this type of Impressionist art.

Finger painting artist Iris Scott trades her bush for her hands to create vibrant works of art.

Stunning Aerial Photos Tell the Stories of New York City and Los Angeles From Above

Photographer Jeffrey Milstein tells the tale of two cities through aerial photography. His series LA NY features a birds-eye-view look at two world-famous metropolises: Los Angeles and New York City. In breathtaking shots, we get a sense of the idiosyncrasies between the two coastal locales, from their architecture to commutes to leisure activities.

Milstein captured all of his LA NY shots from the air, without the help of a drone. Pointing his camera downward a 90-degree angle, the vantage point highlights the unique patterns found in everyday landscapes. In New York, this is especially striking with its grid system that neatly organizes the neighborhoods into geometric shapes—a motif that highlights greater, more fundamental differences between the two places. With its hustle and bustle, New York City has a reputation for being rigid and high strung. By contrast, Los Angeles is seen as more laid back with a go-with-the-flow attitude. We see this in Milstein’s documentation, particularly as colorful umbrellas dot the beach along the Pacific Ocean; even Los Angeles’ freeways have a more whimsical feel with giant, sweeping curves.

Milstein has compiled the beautiful aerial real estate photography into a book of the same name. LA NY was published by Thames & Hudson and features incredible details of both cities’ architecture as well as cultural events like the annual Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade in New York. LA NY is now available on Amazon.

Interactive Map Pinpoints Every Vinyl Record Shop in the World

Record Shops Near Me

Passionate music fans are always on the hunt for great tunes, whether that’s at home or while traveling. If you’re someone obsessed with finding cozy record shops wherever you go, then the website VinylHub was created with you in mind. It’s an interactive, crowd-sourced map that has a straightforward (but impressive) purpose. “Our mission,” they state, “is to document every physical record shop and record event on the planet.”

While the task is truly never-ending, the contributors at VinylHub have already done a thorough job listing record shops. Using a custom Google map, you can scroll the world, zoom in, and see the exact locations of these often-small businesses. It’s perfect if you’re a music fanatic and are visiting a new city; you simply drag the cursor across that specific area and see what pops up. Because many record shops heavily curate and highlight local music, you can then pick up a special travel souvenir.

There are still many record stores to chart, and large swaths of the world have yet to be documented. Of them, however, VinylHub has collected some interesting data. In a recent blog post, they reveal that the United States has the most record shops per country, but when it comes to record shops per city, that’s a different story. Tokyo takes the top spot here with 93, followed by Berlin, London, and Paris. New York is the sixth spot with a mere 47 shops on the island.

Have you ever wondered, “Where are record shops near me?” Well, ponder no longer.

Thanks to the crowd-sourced map VinylHub, it documents every physical record shop around the world.

Tesla Announces New Electric Semi Trucks and Big Companies Are Already Lining Up for Preorders

Tesla Semi Trucks Electric Transportation

With nearly 2 million semi-trucks in the United States alone, Tesla is venturing to make an environmentally friendly dent in the market. Using his trademark flair, CEO Elon Musk unveiled the company’s new electric semi-truck at a splashy event that saw an 18-wheeler hauled out on stage. With a 500-mile range and streamlined design, Tesla is looking to revolutionize the way goods are hauled across the country.

Impressively, the Tesla semi can reach up to 60 mph in 5 seconds without a trailer, and with an 80,000-pound load can make that speed in 20 seconds. To put this into perspective, it takes a diesel semi-truck about one minute while hauling a similar load. Musk also stated that with just 30 minutes of charging on the company’s new Megachargers, the semi can go 400 miles.

In terms of design, the Tesla electric semi was designed with the comfort of the driver in mind. There is full standing room within the cabin and center driving for increased visibility. Two touchscreens help monitor blind spots, give access to navigation, and provide electronic data logging. It’s also possible to travel as a convoy, with several Tesla semis following a lead semi across long distances autonomously.

elon musk tesla semi

Increased safety was also a concern, with Musk stating that jackknifing would be nearly impossible due to two independent motors that can adjust torque. This also means that the roll risk is also greatly reduced. And while Tesla isn’t the first company to market electric semi-trucks—Cummins and Daimler have also announced plans—they are already making headway with big companies and plan to go into production in 2019.

Just a few days after the big event, Walmart announced that they preordered 15 Tesla semis with Canadian grocery chain Loblaw also stating that they’d put the $5,000 deposit down for 25 of their own. With businesses anxious to show that they are doing their part to lower emissions, it will be interesting to see who else jumps aboard in the coming year.

Traveling Illustrator Captures London’s Historic Pubs as Cut-Out Pen and Ink Drawings

London Pub Illustrations Maxwell Tilse

This post may contain affiliate links. If you make a purchase, My Modern Met may earn an affiliate commission. Please read our disclosure for more info.

Earlier this year, we introduced you to London-based illustrator Maxwell Tilse, who combines his love of drawing with his passion for traveling. Originally from Sydney, Australia, the 23-year-old travels Europe, documenting each city he visits with beautifully detailed pen and ink sketches. Now, as he prepares to leave London after living there for two years, he has released a new series of cut-out drawings that depict the city’s oldest pubs.

“London is a city packed to the brim with historical wonders that are so easy to miss or pass by, unnoticed,” says Tilse. From the wedge-shaped Black Friar built in 1875, to the quaint Georgian architecture of the The Bricklayers Arms in Fitzrovia, Tilse captures the essence of London’s most quintessentially English watering holes—the oldest being The Old George, which has been in business since 1713.

Approximately 5cm in height, Tilse’s “little pubs” feature charming details, such as stain glass windows, ornamental balconies, and Tudor style chimneys. “I do love the mock Tudor architecture that’s nestled in between the grand Victorian hotels and galleries,” the artist admits. He finishes his process by photographing his work, held up beside the original building.

If you love Tilse’s work you can purchase prints via his Etsy shop. Keep up to date with Tilse’s illustrated travel journal on Instagram.
