Paris Apartment Looks Exactly Like a Wes Anderson Film Inside (and It’s For Sale)

Paris Apartment is Wes Anderson in Real Life

Director Wes Anderson is known for his visually striking aesthetic in both how his characters look and the places they inhabit. There are entire subreddits and Instagram accounts dedicated to finding locales that have the same sort of off-beat colors and vintage-style opulence that make his films so alluring. With projects like Accidental Wes Anderson, however, we hardly ever see what’s beyond the facade of these quirky buildings—until now. A Paris apartment that was recently listed for sale looks like it could be Margaux Tenenbaum’s place.

The spectacular three-bedroom space is a southeast-facing unit that occupies the top floor of a building located in the Passy area of Paris. With the Eiffel tower visible from the apartment, the view alone is worth it. But inside, there’s a lot to marvel over. The entrance gallery is its most striking feature and the most Anderson-esque part of the entire place. It has bright green walls, a parquet floor, and an ornate wrought iron staircase that complements some of the finer details on the wall paneling and hanging light.

The grand entryway is just the beginning. In addition to that space, there’s a large living room, a small living room, a dining room, a master bedroom (with a marble bathroom attached), and a kitchen. Each has wood paneling on the walls and impeccable styling that’s a mix of eclectic findings and bright color pairings.

Complete with a bay window and balconies, this 400 square meter (4,305 square feet) abode will cost you—the asking price is €5,775,000. For those in the United States looking for a Parisian getaway, that will run you roughly $6.72 million.

If you’ve ever wanted to live like you were in a Wes Anderson film, now’s your chance.

Vintage New York Photos Reveal Gritty City Life, Before Anyone Had a Cellphone

From 1977 to 2001, photographer Richard Sandler roamed the streets of New York City, capturing some of the most iconic street photography of this bustling city in flux. Using his Leica, he documented generations of New Yorker’s caught in the whirlwind of change that almost 30 years brought upon the city.

In his book, The Eyes of the City, Sandler showcases the best of his photography, which captures everything from the urban decay of the 1980s to the ever-widening class differences, which is a recurring theme throughout his work. Sandler’s subjects appear vacant and preoccupied, lost in their own worlds looking for love or wishing themselves anywhere but the graffiti-laden subway. It’s this energy that fills Sandler’s favorite photograph, CC Train, 1985, which also graces the cover of his book.

“I like this one because every person is looking at me or through me, but also looking at YOU, the viewer! Each person in the picture is a kind of question mark requiring your interpretation,” the acclaimed photographer tells My Modern Met via email. “The graffiti and clothing date it as the recent past, but it is their gazes at us that I find timeless and haunting. The best pictures are the ones that ask more questions than they answer.”

Today, Sandler reflects back on his time as New York’s foremost street photographer. In a time when people look back upon a pre-9/11 New York with nostalgia, his work has continued to garner a strong following. “As the recent past ripens, it fades into the distance, but until it does, its meanings live in limbo and uncertainty. In our own time, ‘the recent past’ are the two decades just before computers, cell phones, and the internet, and most of us miss that time because, though we were not connected to the worldwide grid, we were more connected to one another.”

In fact, Sandler points to the rise of the cell phone as the main reason he stopped photographing New York’s streets. “I don’t want people on cell phones in my pictures because they are essentially virtual; their bodies are on the street but their attentions are elsewhere and they walk around in bubbles,” he shares with us. “I like intensity in street photography and people on cell phones are boring.”

Richard Sandler’s images from Eyes of the City are on view at the Leica Store in New York City through November 29, 2017. He will also be hosting a talk about street photography and his work on November 10, from 6 pm to 8 pm.

Acclaimed street photographer Richard Sandler spent almost 30 years roaming the streets of New York City with his Leica.

10+ Different Types of Houses Found in Countries Around the World

Different Types of Houses Around the World

Throughout history, people have fabricated shelters that fit their surroundings. With a universal set of criteria in mind—including access to tools, availability of materials, and type of climate—individuals from all over the world constantly reinterpret, reimagine, and redefine the concept of home.

To many of us, a home is a four-walled fixture on a permanent foundation. But to others, it is a snowy sanctuary, a hidden cave, or even a floating boat. Here, we explore these different types of houses in order to understand how and why such a wide range of shelters exist across the globe.

Let’s take a tour of different types of houses around the world.

Cave Homes (Matmata, Tunisia)

Different Types of Houses Around the World

In Matmata, Tunisia, cave homes—ancient abodes that have been carved out of sandstone—keep people comfortable all year long. Situated around a central pit and connected by a network of passageways, these one-of-a-kind properties provide protection from the North African sun and desert winds.

Today, many cave homes in locations around the world have been turned into unique cave hotels.

Rondavels/Round Homes (Lesotho, South Africa)

Different Types of Houses Around the World

In South Africa, rondavels—rounded, single-cell huts—are favored for their ability to be built from natural, locally sourced materials. Like igloos, rondavels were traditionally used as temporary hunting lodgings.

Today, round houses are built and bought by people interested in saving both space and energy.

Stilt Houses (Cambodia, Southeast Asia)

In Southeast Asia, where heavy rain is prevalent, you can find communities of stilt houses. These homes are raised up on planks in order to protect its inhabitants and their possessions from flooding. They’re also designed to sit just high enough to keep safe from invading vermin—namely, snakes and insects. Additionally, their roofs are sloped, in order to allow rainwater to easily stream down without damaging the property.

Though they’re primarily built in Southeast Asia today, stilt houses are also present in the western hemisphere where homes are faced with hurricane damage. This type of house is thought to have first be used (in the west) by indigenous tribes of the Americas.

Yurts (Kyrgyzstan, Central Asia)

Yurts—portable tents traditionally composed of animal skins—have been used by Central Asian nomads for centuries. While, in the past, these structures were intended as temporary shelters, contemporary construction methods and access to new materials have allowed them to be used as permanent housing.

Underground Houses (Coober Pedy, Australia)

Different Types of Houses Around the World

In addition to being the “opal capital of the world,” Coober Pedy, a South Australian town, is renowned for its “dugouts,” special shelters built beneath the Earth’s surface.

According to Smithsonian Magazine, these unique underground homes act as an oasis from the outback’s heat (summer temperatures can reach a sweltering 113 degrees Fahrenheit) and occasional dust storms. For this reason, half of the town’s residents—as well as a museum, a church, and even a hotel—have opted for this underground lifestyle.

Igloos (Baffin Island, Canada)

Different Types of Houses Around the World

Though not as prevalent as they once were, igloos are used by outdoors enthusiasts as temporary shelters. Skillfully constructed out of insulating, compressed snow, the icy accommodations keep dwellers warm by blocking harsh winds and housing a small fire.

Today, igloos—which are deeply connected to Inuit history and culture—can be found in Baffin Island, Canada, and other snowy, North American locations.

Adorable Animated Spider Named Lucas Is So Cute, Even Arachnophobes Will Smile

Adorable Animated Spider Named Lucas

Many people have a fear of spiders, but it’s hard to resist this adorable arachnid named Lucas. Animator Joshua Slice introduced the cute character in a very short film aptly called Lucas the Spider. With such large, glossy eyes, how could you not say “aww” when you see him? What makes the 21-second clip even cuter is the addition of Slice’s nephew, who voices Lucas and brings him to life with a child-like personality.

In this video, the animated spider first approaches from across a chair. Lucas scurries towards us, looks at us directly, then peers over the edge and continues his journey. Although a brief encounter, Slice himself has made it unforgettable, writing, “I’m responsible for the design, modeling, rigging, animation, lighting, and rendering.” If he continues to develop Lucas, it’s likely to only get better—Slice originally intended this short just as a test.

In addition to Lucas the Spider, Slice has worked in the animation department of some big-name flicks. He’s been involved in Zootopia, Big Hero 6, and the upcoming film Ferdinand.

This animated spider named Lucas is sure to make you smile—even if you have arachnophobia.

Budapest Buildings Transformed into Street Corners with Striking Symmetry

Digital Collage Architecture Photography

Photographer Zsolt Hlinka creates imaginary places out of real architectural forms. His latest series called Corner Symmetry features intersecting buildings in Budapest that have been split in half and mirrored in the center of the composition. The result produces an extreme perspective of a stunning cityscape, where the top of the structures are angled at 45 degrees.  Because of this, it seems like we’re viewing them through a fisheye lens—but it’s really a meticulously crafted digital collage.

With much of Hlinka’s abstract architecture photography, we can’t help but think these buildings are real. It’s only after we’ve spent time with each picture that we realize they’re two halves of the same whole. This momentary confusion is all Hlinka’s design. “Buildings keep more of their surroundings with them, so the illusion becomes even more realistic,” he writes. “However, no matter which side of these familiar looking buildings do we start our inspection first, we will always end up on the same points.”

Corner Symmetry expands on Hlinka’s earlier project called Urban Symmetry. For that series, he digitally manipulated straight-on views of buildings to create harmonious reflections against similarly monochromatic backgrounds. They have a distinctly Wes Anderson feel that’s both whimsical yet curious—leaving us wondering what’s behind the doors of these isolated structures.

Zsolt Hlinka uses digital collage to construct his abstract architecture photography.

Powerful Palette Knife Paintings Capture Vulnerability of Men with Mental Health Issues

Contemporary Oil Painting Emotional Portraits by Joshua Miels

How Much For Cash

Australia-based contemporary artist Joshua Miels captures the emotions of human beings through a series of colorful, multi-layered, large-scale portraits. His most recent work focuses on capturing the vulnerability of men who suffer from mental health issues, which is a subject close to Miels’s heart.

The expressive painter starts by breaking photos of subjects down into shapes using computer software. Using these shapes as a basis, Miels then builds up details on canvas with layers of thick oil paint using a range of palette knives. The intimate portraits often feature men looking past the viewer, in solemn hues of blues and intense reds. Having a family member who has struggled with mental health issues, Miels hopes that his paintings will raise awareness by encouraging viewers to “look, reflect, and think about someone who might be struggling.”

Miel sometimes projects his own emotions onto his canvases in an abstract form. “I like to feel the struggle when I paint,” he reveals, and sometimes—on “bad days”—deliberately damages a piece to “give it some life.”

Joshua Miels creates portrait paintings that capture the emotions of men suffering from mental health issues.

Over 2,000 Paintings by Impressionist and Post-Impressionist Masters Now Free Online

free art images barnes collection online

“On the Grass” by Pierre-Auguste Renoir

The Barnes Foundation is a gem of a collection in Philadelphia put together by Dr. Albert C. Barnes in the early 20th century as a space to stimulate art appreciation. Using his personal collection amassed between 1912 and 1951, Barnes believed in teaching people about art through their visual relationships and has a forerunner in public arts education, it’s only fitting that the Foundation joins the myriad of institutions placing their collections online.

That Barnes Collection Online is a fantastic resource for fans of Impressionist and Post-Impressionist painting. All the big names are represented from Renoir to Monet, Cézanne to Picasso. The collection is impressive not only as a free art history resource, but also by the way the images are organized. Taking a page from museums like the Cooper Hewitt Design Museum, which allows you to search item by Crayon color, the Barnes’ online art database is arranged to mirror Dr. Barnes’ teaching philosophy. So far, over 2,000 items from the collection have made their way online, with 1,429 images available for free download.

Of course, you can simply type in the name of the artist you’re looking for, but it’s also possible to filter by colors, lines, light, and space. So while you discover some interesting art, you can also think about the elements of art within each piece. Going a step further, once you click on an individual image, you can not only learn basic information, including copyright, bibliography, and exhibition history, but more about the work in context.

“Ginger Jar” by Paul Cézanne

Each piece also has a tab that shows you how it’s displayed within the Barnes Foundation, in addition to links to the other artworks that surround it. These displays are known as ensembles and were meticulously curated by Dr. Barnes himself to “draw out visual similarities between objects we don’t normally think of together.” In keeping with this theme, it’s also possible to view works that are “visually similar” to any item in the collection, sliding a scale between “more similar” and “more surprising.”

Thus, the Barnes Collection Online becomes a teaching tool and extension of the Foundation’s original philosophy, allowing art lovers from around the world to enjoy this eclectic collection from the comforts of their home.

The Barnes Foundation—a leading collection of Impressionist and Post-Impressionist paintings—has recently placed over 2,000 objects from its collection online.
