Hveravellir, meaning “The Hot Spring Fields”. is located on the edge of the 8000 year old Kjalhraun lava field 650 meters above sea-level in the Icelandic highlands

There was an old route through this area from north of the country to south, which is referred to in the Viking Sagas with the first references being from around year 900. This road is called Kjalvegur road and that´s more or less the same route we follow to this day

There is a high temperature geothermal area here and also a lovely hot pool in which one can bathe

Landmannalaugar is known for its natural geothermal hot springs and stunning surrounding landscape. Having the active volcano, Hekla, in its neighborhood makes it one of Iceland’s most unique destinations.

The area displays a number of unusual geological elements, like the multicolored rhyolite mountains, expansive lava fields and hot springs
It´s a must see for all who truly appreciate the beauty of nature.

Gjáin in Thjorsardalur valley is a pair of falls  within a lush garden paradise nestled within a rift zone. While the waterfalls themselves are attractive,  the rift zone setting is really beautiful in that it feels like you are entering a different place that contrasted from the typically dry and desolate desert highlands surrounding the area.

This is a lava area and the lava can take on such beautiful form. There are several lava caves in Gjáin and all over there is columnar basalt and volcanic tuff.

Látrabjarg cliffs is the largest sea-bird cliff in Europe and westernmost point of Iceland.  On a clear, sunny day it is sometimes possible to see the glare from the ice cap in nearby Greenland, only 278km (173 miles) away.

The great cliffs of Látrabjarg are one of the great natural wonders of Iceland. The vertical wall of layered basalt drops straight down into the waters of Breiðafjörður from such dizzying heights that the human eye fails to take it all in

Þjófafoss waterfall meaning “thieves falls” Apparently, the falls got its name because thieves were drowned here for their crimes, or that´s how the story goes 🙂

Surrounded by vast lava fields with Mt Búrfell just behind it’s a beautiful waterfall

Lake Hnausapollur is one of two crater lakes of the Veidivotn System south of River Tungna in the south central highlands of Iceland.

Beautiful blue crater lake that people should try to visit on their way to Landmannalaugar nature reserve

Home to Iceland’s wildest, most extreme scenery, the vast, empty interior can be accessed only by four-wheel-drive vehicles. It’s mostly uninhabitable volcanic deserts with beautiful oasis-like areas in between, like this one here

Nothing you might see elsewhere in Iceland prepares you for the stark, desolate, raw beauty of the barren highlands. Europe’s last true wilderness. Sheep are virtually the only living things that manage to survive here and only during the summer months

The northern lights season has come to an end in Iceland this winter. Now the nights are not dark enough to see them and won´t be again until late august

This winter was the best one, we northern lights lovers have had for some years now and I hope that will continue for many winters to come.

I live here and I can go out and try to catch some lights almost any time I like and after all these years I still can´t get enough of this amazing phenomenon

Have you ever been to the middle of nowhere? Iceland’s Interior Highlands are where man has never made his home and you can travel long distances without seeing another person

Here, nature is still at its rawest, with glaciers, deserts of black sand, barren glacial moraine, steaming hot springs, active and spent volcanoes and strange oases of vegetation, rivers and waterfalls
