Covadonga – National Shrine by Frank// Covadonga, Spain

In 722 AD, Iberian Christians won a namesake battle over the Muslims in Covadonga. This was the first Christian victory in the Iberian Peninsula over the Arabs and Berbers invading from north Africa under the Umayyad banner, and is often considered to be the start of the 770-year effort to expel Muslim rulers governing the Iberia during the Reconquista. Our Lady of Covadonga is a significant Marian shrine. The Spanish Army has, over the years, named several of its units “Covadonga”.

In the mountains above the town are located the two lakes of Covadonga, Enol and Ercina, and the road leading to the lakes is often featured in the Vuelta a España bicycle race. Covadonga is een nationaal schrijn en een bedevaartsoord omdat in de slag bij Covadonga koning Pelayo in 722 de Moren versloeg, waarmee de Reconquista begon, die zeven eeuwen zou duren (1492, val van Granada). In de Santa Cueva of Heilige Grot, bevindt zich een kapel met de Virgen de Las Batallas, een houten 18de-eeuws madonnabeeld, en tevens de graftombe van Don Pelayo, zijn vrouw en zijn zuster. De kapel werd herhaaldelijk vernietigd en daarna terug gerestaureerd. De laatste keer dat dit gebeurde was tijdens de Spaanse Burgeroorlog (1936-1939).

Don Pelayo hield zich hier schuil in zijn gevecht tegen de Saracenen. In 718 werd hier door Pelayo en zijn gezellen de Eed van Covadango gezworen, die inhield dat zij tot het uiterste zouden vechten tegen de Moren, die daarna inderdaad verslagen werden, waardoor de krijgskans een keer nam. Ondanks het legendarisch karakter van verschillende elementen van de verhalen over Pelayo, werd hij een belangrijk symbool van de christelijke weerstand in de middeleeuwse geschiedenis van Spanje. In de islamitische geschiedschrijving is de Slag bij Covadonga slechts van ondergeschikte betekenis.

Van het klooster dat in 1777 door brand verwoest werd zijn alleen een binnenplaats en twee grafkapellen overgebleven.

De basiliek van Santa María la Real de Covadonga, naar een ontwerp van Roberto Frassinelli, gebouwd tussen 1877 en 1901 in een neoromaanse stijl, is rijk aan historische souvenirs. http://flic.kr/p/yAdhZo

Another shot from Zion Canyon, this time a full on view of one of those massive cliffs which makes this wonderful National Park so interesting. The first thing you notice as you enter the Zion canyon is its massive cliffs and their incredible texture and color. It was interesting to learn that the whole area was once the world’s largest desert whose massive sand dunes turned into sandstones under massive pressure and then slowly eroded by water and wind to create the stunning Zion Canyon that we see today.
