Have You Ever Seen the Rain? by RussellMcGuire by RussellMcGuire
There is nothing more beautiful than an Arizona monsoon. When I first moved to Phoenix, I had never witnessed a monsoon before. I assumed that it was just like your typical thunderstorm from back home in Houston. Boy was I ever wrong. These storms put our little thunderstorms to shame.
For those who have never been in a desert monsoon before, let me try to explain it to you. Imagine one second atmospherics conditions are relatively calm. Maybe there is a nice breeze blowing and you see a few storm clouds off in the distance. Let’s say you look down for a few minutes to check Facebook or Instagram on your cell phone. When you look back up, all hell has broken loose. There is lighting and wind and rain that popped up out of nowhere. That is what being in a monsoon in Arizona is like… and I love it!

Westcombe Beach by adamburton by adamburton
I photographed this picture of Westcombe Beach in Devon almost exactly 10 years ago when I was fairly new to digital cameras. At the time it was one of my favourite pictures, and is still probably my best picture from Westcombe. But for many years now, I have felt very uncomfortable with the image, the processing of the original looks way too overcooked for my tastes now. Today, I needed a picture of Westcombe to illustrate an article I am writing, so too embarrassed to use the original picture I decided to reprocess it with a little more considered approach. I’m really pleased I did so as now I’m in love with the picture all over again!
I’ve always felt that I keep processing to a minimum, but when I compare the two versions I’m amazed how back then I didn’t notice how awful it was! Hopefully in 10 years time I won’t be quite so disappointed when I review the processing of my 2016 pictures!
