How to Buy a OnePlus One Without an Invite (Today Only)

OnePlus made a great Android phone, the One, bringing flagship-level specs with a nearly unheard of price point: $299 for the 16GB variant; $349 for the 32GB variant. And, oh yea, the devices come fully unlocked, ready for your SIM card to be plugged in (GSM/HSPA/LTE networks only—sorry Sprint and Verizon subscribers).

The only problem was actually getting your hands on one. While it may not be as bad as trying to snatch up a Nexus 6 with its perpetual “out of stock” status, it did require getting an invite from either a OnePlus contest or from owners of the device. If you’ve been trying to… more

How to Hack Wi-Fi: DoSing a Wireless AP Continuously

Welcome back, my nascent hackers!

In previous tutorials for my Wi-Fi Hacking series, I have shown you how to crack WEP and WPA2 passwords, break a WPS PIN, and create Evil Twin and Rogue access points. In this continuation of the series, let’s look at slightly different approach to attacking wireless.

(If you are new to hacking Wi-Fi, make sure you check out the getting started guide before attempting any of the tasks mentioned above.)

Bring Back Airplane Mode & Audio Toggles to Your Nexus 5’s Power Menu

In an effort to make things simple and more secure, Google decided to slim down the power menu in Android 5.0. What once provided a quick link to shut your device down, turn on Airplane mode, and toggle volume states, has now been relegated to a simple power switch. Lucky for us, developer Gar Ynych has created a flashable ZIP that will revert these changes and restore functionality to the Nexus 5’s power menu. In a few simple steps, you can add the volume toggles and Airplane mode switch right back where they belong.

DIY Instant Cup O’ Noodles for a Better Lunch

Instant ramen and just-add-water noodles are lifesavers because they are convenient and fast, but they are also usually chock-full of processed ingredients and unrecognizable pieces of dehydrated meat and vegetables.

These DIY cups o’ noodles are still portable and fast for BYO lunches, but they are also much healthier than their convenience store counterparts. They also actually taste good.

I recommend using larger jars than petite mason jars; I used my jumbo-sized glass jars for the ones pictured here. I have a healthy appetite, so most of the other homemade ‘pot’ noodles I see online or… more

No LED Flash on Your Android Device? Use Your Screen as a Flashlight Instead

Using my Nexus 7 tablet as a flashlight to light my path on the way to my room late at night is difficult, and honestly, useless. It doesn’t have an LED flash for pictures, so using it as a flashlight is essentially just me brightening the display as high as it can go.

If your Android device lacks an LED light or has a broken one, you can still use it as a de facto “flashlight.” All you need is a simple app called Screen Flashlight, from the development team over at Zabamobile, which is free on Google Play. The app displays a blank, white screen at full brightness, which simulates the closest… more

Securely Send Self-Destructing Files & Notes with DSTRUX

The internet is forever. When you put something out there, it can easily be re-shared, floating from server to server indefinitely with no way of taking it back. It’s a scary thought when you consider that a young adult’s grandchildren will one day have access to their drunken party pics.

The best method of avoiding the disastrous ripple effects that can come from such an unforgiving internet is to always think before you post, comment, or share. But for those of us who aren’t terribly vigilant in this regard, there’s always DSTRUX—a secure, self-destructing file-sharing system for email and… more

10 More Awesome Organizing Hacks for Your Living Space

Need to add more space in your small closet? For a simple organizational hack, simply connect two clothes hangers with a metal soda tab so that you can hang two articles of clothing on a closet rod slot instead of just one.

On the flip side of the coin, if you don’t have space in your clothing drawers, but have more room in your closet, you can use shower hooks on your closet rod to hang your jeans by their belt loops.

How to Make Delicious Thai Sticky Rice Without a Steamer or Rice Cooker

If you’re a fan of Thai food, I’m sure you’re familiar with sticky rice. There is something so special about its chewy texture and sweet flavor. If you have a desire to make it in your own kitchen but don’t have the proper tools such as a traditional bamboo basket or stackable steamer, there are several other methods that work just as well. Once you try these alternative methods, I’m sure you’ll be “sticking” to them for a while. What Makes Sticky Rice So Sticky?

Sticky rice is a different type of grain from other types of cooking rice. Steaming, not boiling it, is also crucial for creating… more

When in Distress, Shake Your Android to Send a Quick SOS Alert with Your Location

I’ve been lucky enough to never be a victim of street crime, but I have read and seen too many articles and videos to completely rule it out as a possibility. You can do some things to prevent it, but if your life suddenly turns into a scene from Friday the 13th, you’ll want to be prepared with some sort of way to let others know you need help. This is where Shake2Safety comes in, a free Android app from Phontonapps.

With Shake2Safety, you can set your phone to send a message to or call a specific contact whenever you shake your device. This app isn’t ideal to have on at all times since you… more
