The sages have always said that habits are second to nature. Renowned scientists have on the other hand suggested that habits can be formed in just 21 days. All it takes is just repetitive actions that are applied and practiced daily.

This repetitive and daily practices make the action to be part of you such that you will be doing them subconsciously; almost as if they are part of your nature. In fact, if you try to veer off from them after they have become part and parcel of you, you could end up being uncomfortable. Hence, it’s inherent to humans to form habits regardless of whether they are good or bad.

With this knowledge at hand, I’ll focus on how to develop positive habits.

Identification of the Habit

The first step to developing positive habits is the identification of the habit. You have to be aware of the habit you want to form. You must purposely be conscious of it.

To do this effectively, you should do an honest soul searching. For example, you might have a need to put your finances in order. Thus the habit you should think of forming is one of sticking to a budget.

In the same light, you might be adding weight, and you are on the verge of becoming obese. Being obese means you might suffer from lifestyle diseases. So what is the habit you should think of forming? A habit of regular exercise and eating in a healthy way.

Make a Stark Decision

The second step after identification of the habit is making a stark decision to develop the habit. This involves committing yourself to change. This is what will keep you on the right track to developing the habit. There should be no room for procrastination as far as this decision is concerned.

Procrastination is your enemy. It will hold you back from forming the habit. Therefore, make the decision as soon as you have identified the habit and you’re good to go.

Identify the Possible Obstacles That Will Hinder Your Achievement

The third step after consciously making the decision is to identify the possible obstacles that would hinder you from developing the habit. To effectively do this, look at what actions you undertake in your low moments.

For example, if you wanted to form a positive habit of sticking to a budget, could it be that you go for shopping sprees when you feel stressed up or under pressure?

If yes, you should look for an alternative way of dealing with stress. Do not revert to old practices that might hinder you from developing new positive habits. Instead, find another healthy way of dealing with stressors.

Make a Plan

Fourthly, make a plan. This is basically deciding in advance what should be done, when it should be done, and how it should be done. A plan is a visualization with certain goals in mind. It’s the path in which you will develop the positive habit. Thus, you have to exercise practicality and realism so that you can devise plans that are achievable.

For example, when you want to form the habit of sticking to a budget, your plan could include forming a list of essential items that you should buy. It could also include writing a shopping list before going for shopping in order to avoid impulse buying.

Gather Support and Develop Positive Ways of Rewarding Yourself

The fifth step to developing good habits is gathering support. Tell everyone that matters to you of your undertaking. Let them know that you are determined to develop a certain positive habit and that you would need their wholesome support in accomplishing it. If they care about you, then for sure they’ll give you overwhelming moral support.

Now let’s say you normally went for shopping sprees with a certain clique of friends. If you mention to them that you would like to stop the practice because you’re planning on creating a habit of sticking to a budget, then they shouldn’t pressure you to join them. If they are well meaning, they would even know better than try suggesting that you join them in shopping sprees.

You should also get a close friend that will make you accountable. This is the friend that will be with you in your regular exercise routine; that friend that will help you devise a financial plan or budget.

On the aspect of developing positive ways of rewarding yourself, you would have to keep in mind the already set goals you want to achieve. For example, you might feel justified spoiling yourself to junk foods or even taking large portions of food as a way of rewarding yourself for an achievement.

But remember, your goal is checking on obesity. In the same way, you might want to make a big spontaneous purchase but remember your goal is sticking to a budget.

Therefore, these manners of rewarding yourself become detrimental to your goals. It is imperative that you devise new ways of rewarding yourself after a major achievement.

You can go to the theater and watch a good play instead of indulging in junk foods. You could purchase a simple, inexpensive gift for yourself that is within your budget instead of making a big spontaneous purchase.

Be Patient

In your journey of developing good habits, you should ensure that you give it time. Scientists have given a standard time of 21 days. But, if the habit doesn’t form within 21 days, give it more time. Some habits might take a little longer than 21 days to form. It also depends on the person. Thus at times it could take longer to form a habit than expected but this should not be a cause for worry. Motivate yourself constantly until it sticks.

Another aspect that needs to be given consideration is that the goal should be worked on gradually. You should not expect yourself to develop the habit spontaneously. Focus on motivating yourself more and conditioning yourself for success.

In this journey, you should take cognisance of the fact that developing positive habits might entail kicking out bad habits. We should realize that some habits will lead to undesirable consequences.

Thus, make a point of getting out of the comfort zone. Make a resolution that conforms to the SMART ideal; that is, Specific, Measurable, Rewardable, and Traceable.

You should also create a mark or cue that will remind you to embark on developing the new habit every single day. A good idea might be putting up a reminder note on your phone or fridge (if you normally do so).

Change your Environment

Lastly, do not hesitate to change your environment if circumstances dictate you to do so or if your success is dependent on the change of environment. For example, if you want to avoid impulse buying in order to stick to your budget, choose a local store instead of a mall. Two Rules for Guys

I’ve explored masculinity from a lot of angles over the years, both in my own journey as a man, husband, and father and also with many of my therapy clients. And while masculinity has many facets, nuances, and mysteries, over time I’ve started to see two very simple rules for guys that I’ve found to apply in pretty much any situation we encounter: “Don’t Be A Dick!” and, “Don’t Be A Pussy!”

The first rule is the most obvious of the two. Who wants to be a dick?

“Don’t be a dick!” from my perspective, basically means that you shouldn’t bully people physically (of course), but more importantly through your emotions and words. If you’re bullying other people you might be using your power, but probably not in service of your principles (unless you have a principle that it’s a great thing to bully people).

Bullies actually have a lot of self-esteem, but they don’t have a lot of self-awareness, their relationships suck, and they tend to be unhappy. So that’s the first rule for guys–Don’t be a dick!

Rule number two (“Don’t be a pussy!”) is a little more challenging. Pardon this potentially misogynistic term, but everyone intuitively knows what I mean.

You’re a pussy if you allow somebody to dominate you inappropriately like saying “Yes” when you need to say “No.” If you don’t stand up for your principles and say, “This is what’s right,” in the face of something you believe is wrong, you surrender to external coercion and become a pussy. Often in such cases, the rationale is, “My boss made me do it,” “My wife insisted,” I couldn’t help it,” etc.

We’ve seen such collapses a lot in the last twenty or thirty years in the political arena. People who come out of an administration often write a book and say “Well, the decisions I made (going to war, lying, hurting poor people, surrendering to special interests) went against my principles, but I did it because I was ordered to.”

“I was just following orders” is what the world was contemptuous of in the Nuremberg trials of Nazi war criminals. But it’s interesting how often that gets pulled out when somebody working for some boss or institution violates personal principles.

So if you have a principle, don’t violate it. If you do violate it, you suffer—don’t be a pussy!

So there you have them, my two simple rules for guys. I’m curious to hear if you agree with me.

The Problem of the Perfect Parent

As parents, we may try to keep a clean house, practice good time management skills with getting everyone in the family where they need to be on time, and in general have our act together and run a tight ship. We may not succeed all the time, but striving to do our best is a good thing.

However, there are some parents among us who are experts at keeping things organized and on track. These parents serve healthy, hot meals in spotless kitchens, keep their children perfectly dressed, and arrive early to appointments. You may be thinking, “That sounds awesome! What’s the problem?”

The problem is that the kids are watching. The kids are observing the completely organized lifestyle with few, if any “mistakes.” Kids will try to emulate what parents model for them, and kids who view their parents as perfect and try to be perfect themselves are more likely to become anxious.

They may become easily frustrated and disappointed in their own imperfect performance. Has your child ever crumpled up a drawing or a homework assignment because he or she couldn’t get it just right in his or her mind?

The anxiety that the pursuit of perfection causes in some children, left unchecked, can be the cause of more serious anxiety disorders in children, including obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) or selective mutism (refusal to speak).

As adults, we inherently know that perfection is vapor. Perfection is an unachievable goal.

If you are a parent who tends to do a great job of keeping on top of all the activities of daily life, try this lack-of-perfection-is-okay tip. The next time you are cooking with your child, let an egg fall on the floor in an “accidentally on purpose fashion.” Emphasize to your child that the mess of an egg on the floor is not a big deal. Clean the mess without fanfare and with an “Oops, look what happened, no big deal” attitude. You may even put your shirt on inside out or lose your keys, or spill a glass of milk.

Kids who struggle with perfectionism or anxiety need to find a way to feel in control so the worried thought doesn’t win.

One way to overcome anxiety is to catch it and cope with it before it gets too big to handle. Learning deep breathing, for example, when a child is in a calm state can help the child do that breathing when anxiety starts to creep in.

Whenever you as the parent make a real blunder, share it with your child and, with a laugh, explain how you recovered from it. Show your child that mistakes are not only not a huge problem but a normal part of life. If your child messes something up and feels upset, you can remind him or her of the times you made mistakes in big or small ways and lived to tell (and laugh) about it.
