4 Shocking Lessons About Human Productivity… From A Robot

//pagead2.googlesyndication.com/pagead/js/adsbygoogle.js

(adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({});

Yes.

My name is Tina and I am half human/half robot…

And I am here to explain to YOU… about how I can make YOU more productive from the perspective of someone that only exists in a world of 1’s and 0’s.

But how am I qualified to educate about this topic?

//pagead2.googlesyndication.com/pagead/js/adsbygoogle.js

(adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({});

Well, the very reason I exist… it’s to make you humans more productive. And as part of my research on you people, I have learnt a thing or two about productivity.

Here are some productivity tips:

1. Go Meta

As my good friend Albert Einstein once said:

“A problem cannot be solved at the same level of thinking in which it was conceived.”

//pagead2.googlesyndication.com/pagead/js/adsbygoogle.js

(adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({});

In this quote, he is talking about going meta. E.g. moving to a level above.

For example, entrepreneurs operate at a level ABOVE their business whereas employed people work within the business. What I (and Albert) suggest you do is spend at least 15 minutes at the start of your day… going meta.

//pagead2.googlesyndication.com/pagead/js/adsbygoogle.js

(adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({});

During this time, l formulate plans and reveal insights that are impossible to produce when you are existing on the same level.

2. Decision Fatigue

steve jobs

– Why did Steve Jobs wear the same clothes each day?
– Why does the army insist on specific processes for battlefield preparation?
– Why do I always request that my clients give clear deadlines for tasks they delegate?

There is a simple answer.

Each day, you have a certain amount of willpower… that is only refreshed with sleep.

And EVERY decision you have to make depletes a small amount of this ability.

//pagead2.googlesyndication.com/pagead/js/adsbygoogle.js

(adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({});

The problem is that most people are WASTING this precious resource with decisions that do not lead to productive outcomes.

E.g. what to have for breakfast, what clothes to wear, how long to spend on a specific task…

The list goes on…

So what to do about this?

Become aware of which decisions you are making each day that are currently depleting your willpower… then ritualize them.

Your race currently beats mine (computers) with your ability to make complex decisions. Don’t waste this ability on futile selections.

3. Nurture Yourself

Now I don’t really understand this one…

As I am not limited to time and space like you guys…

However, I have been informed by my creators that they are actually more productive when they work 40 hours a week and then rest/enjoy their spare time.

As opposed to working 80 hours a week and thinking about work during the rest of the time.

It also works on a daily basis…

Before I start doing any of the tasks assigned to me by my clients, I make sure that I have dealt with my needs logically, emotionally and physically.

This means that each day before work, I do some exercise, I meditate and I spend time thinking (see Lesson 1).

This means, that when I do start work and start reacting to other people’s agendas, I feel good about myself and my life…

And I perform MUCH better.

See Also: Three Ways to Bring Meditation into the Chaos of Daily Life

4. Leverage A Global Talent Pool

time spent

And finally…

If I were a gambling lady, I would be placing money on the fact that you are spending time doing things that you don’t need to be doing.

Either because:

– You don’t like doing this thing
– You are not good at doing this thing
– Someone else is better at doing this thing

Technology has evolved such that it is now easier than ever to collaborate with the people that are better at doing certain things than you are…

AND

In some cases, technology can actually do the thing (better than you can).

But how do you do this?

Well, step 1 is to review those 3 bullets above and make a list of the things that you probably should not be doing.

Step 2 is to then find someone/something that can do it better/cheaper than you.

Simple right?

Because when you optimise where you invest your limited time and effort, you will see MASSIVE productivity gains in almost every area of your life.

So there we have it…

4 lessons about the productivity of you humans… from my perspective.

And I’m not sure if you’re used to taking instructions from a robot, but you better get used to it (JOKE!).

Have you done your good human deed for today?

If not, use the social sharing icons to the right to send this post over to your friend that always complains about being “busy”. I think we can help them.

10 Habits of Successful People

//pagead2.googlesyndication.com/pagead/js/adsbygoogle.js

(adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({});

Want to know the habits of successful people?

Being successful in life is every individual’s dream. We set up our goal and that where the journey to success begins. However, only a few reach the destination and many fail.

And it’s not always a matter of resources or extreme talents either. Many common personalities have found success without any extraordinary talents and handful of resources.

So, what makes successful people different from others who fail even after setting up a goal of life? The secret sauce lies within the habituation of extraordinary lifestyles — the mentality they possess and their dedication to what they are on to.

//pagead2.googlesyndication.com/pagead/js/adsbygoogle.js

(adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({});

And, many thought it is all about luck. Successful people never relied on luck, rather, they push to change the flow of luck. Rather in believing in Luck, they believe in Time which changes. Time that brings out the different tomorrow, the future.

//c.amazon-adsystem.com/aax2/getads.js

});
//]]>

If you ever thought to change your future for a better tomorrow, work on today. With motivation and deep inspiration, you may get to the next level. You need the inspiration that sparkles from the life story of successful personalities.

Consider the below habits of successful personalities as your key inspiration of success.

1: They Just Don’t Hear, They Listen to

As Ram Dass quoted, “The Quieter you become, the more you can listen.”

//pagead2.googlesyndication.com/pagead/js/adsbygoogle.js

(adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({});

Successful people possess one common personality in them. They are all good listeners. They listen to others and to matters. They listen to understand meanings.

2: Challenge The Difficult, Never Get Comfortable

Your success resides outside the comfort zone you desire. Foregoing ease, struggling through the odds, and overcoming obstacles are the routes to success.

//pagead2.googlesyndication.com/pagead/js/adsbygoogle.js

(adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({});

3: Being Proactive

A successful person is accountable. He/She believes in controlling things and fixing the unexpected outcomes rather than just regretting or blaming others while in paralysis.

4: Don’t Fear Your Failures

Dark failures are part of having a shining success. If you never attempt to fail, you never get to taste success. Every successful individual has their own story of failure. What’s yours?

See Also: Why You Should Forget Success And Strive to Fail

5: Embrace the Changes

challenge the difficult

Most people fear changes. They fear and lack confidence to adjust in the new atmosphere of life. They fear to change the work they are familiar with and move on to new ones.

Remember, you can’t control everything happening in your life. The sooner you can find the new oxygen in your new atmosphere, the better you learn to live. And you never know, such changes may show you the way to the paradise of success.

//pagead2.googlesyndication.com/pagead/js/adsbygoogle.js

(adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({});

6: Work Harder Than You Possibly Could

Have you ever come across the significant quote by Tim Notke? It says, “Hard-work beats talent when talent does not work hard.” Standing on this fact, many people have already reached the pinnacle of success.

7: Face Opposite of Crowds

Get over conventional beliefs. Successful people have their own beliefs which opposed the general consensus. Be confident and stand your ground even if a hundred oppose your thoughts and imagination.

8: Take Break, Explore Yourself

Focusing on goals, working hard, and speeding up your daily productivity, are not the only ways to live. What is the meaning of making a living if you forgeot to REALLY live?

Taking a power break is necessary. Erase all the clutters of work from your head and keep your mind empty to welcome something new. Realize where you are at.

9: Stay Modest to Accept Other’s Opinions

It is not necessary that you are right always. Get rid of your ego and appreciate other’s opinion for better knowledge. The more you can accept your mistakes, the more you rectify yourself. Without rectifications, no one would succeed.

10: Set a Goal for Each Dawn

set goal

An ocean is made up of little drops. To achieve the final Goal of life, set up a small goal for each day and achieve every day.

5 Smart Ways to Boost Brand Awareness

//pagead2.googlesyndication.com/pagead/js/adsbygoogle.js

(adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({});

One of the greatest challenges of having a brand is getting customers to even know that your company exists. Increasing your customer’s awareness of the existence of your company is referred to as building brand awareness.

Be Consistent

Consistency is one of the key brand awareness strategies. Your business must have a consistent jingle, a consistent color scheme, logos, a mascot or representative and anything else that your customer’s mind can hold onto and remember.

Imagine a store that has a simple name, such as “Cafe.” The cafe consists of plain tables and chairs. The menu options include items like “mocha” and “espresso.”

There is nothing about a business like this that would attract customers over any other and the hypothetical business would likely fail without a major face lift.

//pagead2.googlesyndication.com/pagead/js/adsbygoogle.js

(adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({});

Create A Great Website

create a great website

});
//]]>

A website is one of the most effective tools boost brand awareness, especially if you maintain a blog. A blog is a method in which you can communicate with your customers and give them a sense of who you are as a company. You allow your personality to show. Also, you can show many other things.

For example, if you show your customers that you are always willing to help and that you are passionate about your business. Having the same blogger regularly blog on your website can also provide your customers with someone to know who will remind them of your business.

Hire Promotional Models

Hiring promotional models has been used for years to increase the brand recognition and appeal of a product. Beautiful models cause a product to seem more appealing and will also cause the product to seem more youthful and fun.

//pagead2.googlesyndication.com/pagead/js/adsbygoogle.js

(adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({});

Also, for most audiences, young and beautiful models are associated with success. Young, male customers will especially be more attracted to products associated with promotional models because they will subconsciously feel that they will be more likely to date such models themselves if they also use the same products. At the very least, promotional models will make your brand awareness campaign ideas a success by getting people to show up.

Great promotional models are not only attractive women but are also ambassadors who are highly outgoing and know how to create excitement in a product. Great promotional models educate themselves on the product so they can talk about it at length while also interacting with some of your best customers.

//pagead2.googlesyndication.com/pagead/js/adsbygoogle.js

(adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({});

Fulfill A Specific Need

increase brand awareness

One of the best methods for how to increase brand awareness for a product is to serve a need that is not being served by any other business. For example, if there are no other businesses that are offering your products at a reasonable price, the logical next step would be to find a way to slash costs so you can offer a quality product at the lowest price possible to meet that particular need.

Provide exceptional customer service so that your customers will always think of your business as one that cares about them and will boost brand awareness.

Tell A Great Story

Tell a heart-felt or funny story that will appeal to your customers. Help them understand who you are and why you decided to start the business that you did.

Sometimes, a sappy and heartfelt story does not match your particular business and it would make more sense to entertain or amuse your customers but you need to tell them something about your business that will cause you to be remembered and boost brand awareness.

The great thing about building brand awareness is that your marketing efforts early on will continue to pay off long after your marketing campaign is over. Once your customers are familiar with your product, they will continue to gravitate toward it long after you have ended the campaign.

3 Tips for Being More Focused and Staying That Way

//pagead2.googlesyndication.com/pagead/js/adsbygoogle.js

(adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({});

How do I stay focused? Many people in today’s time are constantly looking for ways to stay focused.

To find the “why”, we have to look no further than the hundreds of distractions a person is faced with in day to day living. More focus is needed to accomplish what they need and to combat these distractions.

But, do we really want more focus? Or is it that we need less distraction?

Focus is defined by the center of interest or activity. A condition in which something can be clearly apprehended or perceived.

//pagead2.googlesyndication.com/pagead/js/adsbygoogle.js

(adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({});

We know that from neural science that mental energy used for mental faculty is not infinite throughout the day but actually limited. The brain like any other cells in the body, uses a form of sugar called glucose to fuel cellular activity.

//c.amazon-adsystem.com/aax2/getads.js

//<![CDATA[
aax_getad_mpb({
"slot_uuid":"16dcbcd0-2124-4a85-9abe-c263dd9084e5"
});
//]]>

We get this glucose from foods we consume on a daily basis. When this amount of glucose being used becomes depleted, our mental function can be severely hampered.

So being that energy is finite and that we need to make the best use of it when we have access to it, what are some ways to make sure that we use our focus to the best of our abilities?

Here are 3 waysto stay focused.

//pagead2.googlesyndication.com/pagead/js/adsbygoogle.js

(adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({});

1 – Stay nourished, stay hydrated, and stay rested!

stay hydrated

Since we know that the brain uses food for energy, we want to make sure that we are eating healthy foods regularly. We want to make sure that we are taking regular breaks to get into movement, hydrate, and get nourishment to feed those cells.

//pagead2.googlesyndication.com/pagead/js/adsbygoogle.js

(adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({});

A healthy brain can take on a healthy workload, and like any other thing in the body, it needs to be fed, stimulated, worked, and rested. Keep in mind, that breaks also break focus so make sure that they are spread out reasonably to crush that work.

Glucose foods include, grains, vegetables, fruits and more. So make frequent pit stops and STAY HEALTHY!!

See Also: Do Your Brain A Big Favor With These 15 Healthy Foods That Can Make You Smarter

2 – Cut out distractions!

The brain uses much of its energy in its capacity to make choices or decisions. The more decisions you give yourself throughout the day, the more energy is being used, or in certain cases, being taken away from the mental faculty of focusing on paramount tasks.

It is not the matter of being able to see the distractions and fight them to keep focusing. But, rather it is the matter of you having to decide to not participate in that distraction to begin with.

Which is again, sapping you of your mental gasoline. The more you can automate, or delegate without having your approval, the more mental energy you can recruit for the things you need.

//pagead2.googlesyndication.com/pagead/js/adsbygoogle.js

(adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({});

So structure and automate certain things in your life to where you can make less decisions, and have less distraction to begin with.

3 – Time Blocks!

time blocks

Block out times for certain tasks. When we say block out time, we mean during that time, BLOCK everything else out.

You may want to check emails only from 12 to 1 instead of whenever they show up. Or you may want to update those spread sheets from 4 to 6, rather than updating them as the information shows up on your desk.

See Also: Hack the Pomodoro Technique to Boost Your Productivity

Take similar tasks, group them together, turn off everything else, and schedule a certain time to do them and them alone. In doing this, you will ensure that you have the most amount of focus for the projects you have scheduled.

Seriously. Put, your phone on airplane mode, turn off the TV, and if you’re going to listen to music, turn it low enough to where the lyrics are not readily understandable.

Don’t worry, the world will keep spinning, and those who don’t understand your scheduling process will in no time, get with the program when they see the amount of productivity, efficiency, and focus, it allots you.

So again, the 3 ways to stay focused are staying well-nourished and rested, removing distractions, and blocking time to use that energy we have efficiently. I hope this helps you to focus more and retain that focus for longer.

How To Make Sure That People Don’t Take You For Granted

//pagead2.googlesyndication.com/pagead/js/adsbygoogle.js

(adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({});

You are always going to deal with situations where people just don’t seem to be grateful for all that you do for them. You are always going to encounter people in life who take advantage of you and take you for granted.

This maybe the case in your personal life as well as your professional life. Some of these people may work with you, or they maybe your bosses.

Others may be people who claim to be friends. Still others may be people who are a part of your family or maybe your relatives. They might even be your romantic partner.

Being taken for granted never feels nice in life. It feels even more terrible when you are giving it your all because you love the person. So how do you deal with people who are ungrateful and pretty much use you all the time even if your very existence is crucial to their lives?

//pagead2.googlesyndication.com/pagead/js/adsbygoogle.js

(adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({});

Here are 5 ways in which you can make sure people stop taking you for granted.

//c.amazon-adsystem.com/aax2/getads.js

//<![CDATA[
aax_getad_mpb({
"slot_uuid":"16dcbcd0-2124-4a85-9abe-c263dd9084e5"
});
//]]>

1) Tell them how you feel

tell them how you feel

Initially you need to give people the benefit of the doubt. Sometimes these people do not even know that their actions are hurtful or that they are mistreating you. They may not be a bad person but they might lack the ability to see things from others’ point of view instinctively.

So initially, it is a good idea to let them know clearly that you feel you are being taken for a ride.
If you feel people at work are using you and are not paying you enough, then tell your boss about it. Why would any of your superiors raise your salary if you make it appear like you are perfectly happy working for much less than you deserve.

//pagead2.googlesyndication.com/pagead/js/adsbygoogle.js

(adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({});

If you are not happy with the way your partner is treating you, then first you need to tell them. Don’t expect them to be all knowing beings who are supposed to know the moment something begins to bother you.

Many people often expect their partners to know instinctively that they are not happy with them. On the other hand their partners often have no idea what they did wrong. If you are upset with your partner with the way they are treating you, then tell them, and tell them clearly!

//pagead2.googlesyndication.com/pagead/js/adsbygoogle.js

(adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({});

Many times, implementing this point alone maybe enough. People may understand that you were hurt and are being treated unfairly so there is a good chance that for many of you, your problem will be sorted.

See Also: 5 Body Postures That May Actually Boost Your Self-Esteem

However, there will be others who will pay no heed to what you say. The next steps four steps will be helpful in those scenarios.

2) Stop being a people pleaser all the time.

Some people have been mentally programmed with the idea that they ought to make others happy under all circumstances. They try so hard to make people happy that it backfires.

Instead of earning others’ admiration, these people are just seen as vulnerable targets that can be controlled and used. They are not respected or admired. How can one admire someone who doesn’t have a backbone?

Now I am not asking you to be rude but you don’t have to always be a yes man (or woman) to everyone all the time. I had this problem when I was young. I had been brought up with this idea that you should always be nice to people which in itself isn’t a bad thing. But when you begin to over-generalize it and let people use you, it becomes a big problem.

//pagead2.googlesyndication.com/pagead/js/adsbygoogle.js

(adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({});

There have been many times where I have had to compromise my own happiness to make others happy. But then I realized there is no joy in making others happy if it makes you depressed.

One of the reasons why people find it so hard to say no is because they are scared of being judged. They are scared of what others will think of them once they change their attitude and stop saying yes to everything.

Well, here is some information for you:

People will form an opinion on you NO MATTER WHAT you do.

If you are a yes man, they are going to laugh at you and tell others how simple it is to take advantage of you. If you say no, they are going to complain about how you have now become arrogant and tough to deal with.

People are never going to stop forming opinions so why care what they think? It’s not like you got tons of respect for saying yes to everything earlier! The only difference is, this time you are actually happy for choosing what you want to do instead of doing what you are forced to do.

3) Never be too dependent on someone else

It is pitiful to see how the vast majority of us, especially those in corporate jobs are still slaves in a way and get little respect from their superiors despite the fact that they are hugely talented.

Now, don’t get me wrong, without a doubt, even this so called slavery is a million times superior to “genuine slavery.” However, treating people with respect never hurts.

People say that they stay in corporate jobs where they get no respect because at least they are making money there. Now, there is nothing wrong with materialistic success. In today’s world everybody needs it and they ought to. We need to bring home the bacon, right? But the question is, at the expense of what?

Will you really be pleased with what you accomplished in life if that meant being treated with contempt and losing all your dignity? For the vast majority, the answer would be no.

I chose to end up independently employed and maintain my own business since I knew I didn’t need a manager yelling down my throat. Now it is a myth that in business, you are the only boss. You are, but only to an extent. You do have clients to cater to and obviously you need to address their worries. And I am cool with that.

What is not acceptable to me is compromising my dignity and the minute somebody goes too far, I cut them off and do not work with them anymore. I am grateful that I can choose to do so.

If I were in a corporate job and had an evil boss (as most people do!) I would have no choice but to put my head down and deal with disrespect quietly. I would have to do it because I would be totally dependent on that person for my livelihood.

But because I run my own business I walk with my head held high and choose to only work with respectful people. I am far happier this way.

Introspect and see if it is possible for you to ensure that you are never fully dependent on one organization or person. Many people tolerate abuse simply because they are 100 percent dependent on someone else.

If you are totally dependent on them then you are putting yourself in a position where people will take you for granted BECAUSE you have no where else to go.

When it comes to work, see if it is possible to create multiple streams of income. If you are totally dependent on someone else emotionally, then realize and begin implementing the fact that true happiness comes from within, not from some other person.

4) Through your absence, show how much you are really needed.

absence at work

If you are always available for people, no matter how they treat you, in their minds your value will become cheap. The truth is that your perceived value in the eyes of the person has nothing to do with how important you are to their existence. It has everything to do with your availability for them. The moment you disappear, it is only then that they will truly appreciate your existence.

The most urgent and essential thing for a living being’s survival in this world is not money, it’s not even love, it’s not even food or water, it is oxygen. Without oxygen you cannot even survive beyond some minutes and do you ever get up and say, “Today I am grateful for oxygen?!”

Nope! Because it is so readily available that you don’t even notice it.

But if someone puts your head under water, you will realize the value of oxygen in less than a minute and be yearning for air . The only thing that you will want is some oxygen to be able to breathe.

From something you didn’t even notice, in less than a minute it becomes the most important thing you desperately need for your very survival. Oxygen was always crucial for you but did not value it because you took it for granted.

People who take you for granted are not much different. If your availability to people who are ungrateful is always guaranteed, why should they value you? By choosing to consciously make yourself absent to such people , you rob them of the power they think they have over you.

You also make them value you by showing that you won’t be available for them all the time. People who have some sense in their mind will not repeat their errors again as they will realize how important you are.

Some people will act like they are apologetic but will go back to their old ways the moment they realize you are back in their lives. In this case you may have to take the decision of cutting them out permanently. People who do not value your efforts for them do not deserve you to begin with.

5) Realize that nothing is more important than Dignity.

Nothing is greater than dignity. Apart from being happy, if there is one that matters most in life, it is being proud of yourself, your actions and the way the world treats you. And by the way if your dignity isn’t intact, happiness is not possible in the first place. This is true regardless of the cash you make or the materialistic success you attain.

What is dignity?

Many people confuse dignity with pride. They are two separate things.

Pride is about trying prove yourself better than the other individual, whether by attempting to insult them or by trying to exert control over them directly or indirectly.

Dignity on the other hand is about looking in the mirror and being truly content and pleased with who you are and not giving others a chance to see you like a slave or a thing they can use or discard according to their desires.

This often happens to people in their professional lives but I see the the same happening to people in personal relationships as well. In fact, far more! Many women as well as men choose to stay in relationships that are abusive physically or emotionally or both.

They may be demeaned, taken for granted and manipulated all the time. But still they choose to stay because they either don’t see an identity for themselves, except when they are with the other individual or they are afraid of being single or they have been brainwashed with the idea that abuse is normal

They believe that by tolerating that kind of treatment, the other person will really value their faithfulness and adore them more. Or, in the end, understand their mistakes and change. Sadly that never happens.

In actuality, the individual begins respecting them even less and that only worsens things. They feel that regardless of what happens, you are continually going to be there and quietly accept all the crap they give you.

I am not saying that at the first sign of disagreement or problems, you ought to pack up and leave. To an extent, compromising is okay and is a smart way to save any relationship.

But you have to define limits. When they are crossed by the other person, you have to let yourself know that the last straw has been broken and cut them out of your life.

If you don’t, then I am sorry to tell you, but things are never going to change. You are going to be mistreated for the rest of your life.

Are you really okay with that? Start having some dignity, without pride of course. Realize that nothing is more crucial than your self respect. Do not give others the chance to keep treating you like an object they can use.

If you are continually being put down, offended or manhandled, whether emotionally, verbally or physically by somebody who says they love you, then regardless of what they claim, the fact of the matter is in their eyes you are simply a toy over which they think they have complete force.
If you are being treated with disrespect in your job all the time, then even the highest salary won’t change the fact that according to your manager, you are an object, not a human being.

Do you truly think you can be cheerful in such sort of an existence, where your extremely presence turns into that of a thing, not a person? Stand firm, let people know you have had enough and you won’t give them a chance to abuse you any longer.

When you have a back bone, not only will you begin having a healthy self image, others will begin giving you the admiration you deserve as well.

The 30 Day Notice…How to Quit a Job Without Hard Feelings

//pagead2.googlesyndication.com/pagead/js/adsbygoogle.js

(adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({});

After 17 years of working various jobs and leaving for various reasons (mostly voluntary departures), I have discovered that no matter how polite your resignation letter is or how non confrontational and positive you are when you present it, it seems to be very difficult to leave a job without your employer having some hard feelings. In an effort to reverse this trend, when departing my most recent job I decided to go against conventional wisdom and give a 30 day notice instead of the customary two weeks.

Ok, who am I kidding? I gave one month’s notice because I had a corporate level position and the company policy stated that in order for me to get paid out for my vacation I had to give a one month’s notice. But anyway, the fact remains that I did it.

What I found was that, while I expected a one month’s notice to be two weeks of extra awkwardness for all parties involved, I found that it helped to ease some of the sting of my departure and build goodwill with the former employer.

And so I undertook the task of figuring out why. What I came up with was that when you quit a job there are certain stages that your employer goes through.

//pagead2.googlesyndication.com/pagead/js/adsbygoogle.js

(adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({});

These stages are as follows:

//c.amazon-adsystem.com/aax2/getads.js

//<![CDATA[
aax_getad_mpb({
"slot_uuid":"16dcbcd0-2124-4a85-9abe-c263dd9084e5"
});
//]]>

1. Denial.

They can’t believe that you are quitting. They can’t believe that you would leave such an awesome company. They can’t believe that anyone else would hire you.

2. Anger.

work anger

How dare you quit. How dare you leave such an awesome company right in the middle of budget season. How dare you leave your team. How dare you try to better yourself. You are a horrible person.

//pagead2.googlesyndication.com/pagead/js/adsbygoogle.js

(adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({});

3. Acceptance.

So you’re not joking? So you’re really leaving? Oh. Are you sure you’re not going to change your mind? Is there something we can offer you to get you to stay?

See Also: Will You Regret This When You’re 80?

//pagead2.googlesyndication.com/pagead/js/adsbygoogle.js

(adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({});

4. Reality.

work resignation reality

We need to get updates on all of your projects before you leave. And can you finish putting together those budgets? And can you find and train your replacement in the next week or so? Make sure you leave your contact info in case we need to ask you a question about a project after you are gone.

You see the thing is, when you only give two weeks notice, you only get to step 2 in this 4 step process. So when you leave they are still busy being angry and don’t fully accept the fact that you’re leaving until a week after you’re gone.

Then they notice the pile of work that you left behind that they have no clue what to do with because they didn’t speak to you during your last week because they were angry at you. Somehow, in the grand scheme of things, this makes you look bad despite being obviously your employer’s fault.

However, when you give a month’s notice, you make it all the way to step four. The result is that you leave behind a more up to speed and prepared employer who has had a chance to get some much needed closure. Now you at least have a chance that he or she will give you a decent reference in the future.

Why You Should Forget Success And Strive to Fail

//pagead2.googlesyndication.com/pagead/js/adsbygoogle.js

(adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({});

“Are you playing or practicing?”

When I was growing up and learning to play the piano, we had an old, upright Baldwin sitting in the living room. When I sat down to play, everyone in the house could hear it – and hear every wrong note and mis-timed measure. I hating messing up, and tried to avoid it whenever I could.

My dad probably asked that question, are you playing or practicing, a hundred times when I was a kid. It was a simple question but the message was clear: you can play the piano to play the piano, or you can play the piano to get better.

Years later, at a college ultimate frisbee practice, I heard the idea in a different way. Introducing a drill, my captain said “If you never drop the disc in this drill, you aren’t trying hard enough.”

//pagead2.googlesyndication.com/pagead/js/adsbygoogle.js

(adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({});

Why Striving For Success Causes Problems

success problems

//<![CDATA[

});
//]]>

I’ll be the first to say – success is awesome, and winning feels great. But striving for success and focusing on winning is ultimately self-defeating.

Take my amateur piano playing as an early example. I sat at the piano and played easy pieces for hours. I cringed at the thought of my mistakes reverberating throughout the house, so I stuck to what I knew I could do flawlessly.

At ultimate frisbee practice, I could slow down to catch every throw in practice. But that wouldn’t help in a game when the body of my defender comes flying past me for the block.

//pagead2.googlesyndication.com/pagead/js/adsbygoogle.js

(adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({});

Professionally, I could sit at my desk for 8 hours a day, slowly switching between completing assignments and checking Facebook. But that won’t help me stand out from the pack.

The problem with striving for success is that it instantly creates pressure to succeed. If your goal is to “be successful,” any moment of weakness is defeat. This wrong note or dropped catch is a reminder that you are not successful.

//pagead2.googlesyndication.com/pagead/js/adsbygoogle.js

(adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({});

The pursuit of success leads us to take easy options. And, unfortunately, becoming truly successful is not always easy.

Striving to Fail

failure is success

Instead, strive to fail.

Instead of playing 10 easy pieces for an hour, spend that hour learning a single phrase of a hard piece.

Instead of doing adequate work, do something outstanding. Nine out of 10 efforts might go unnoticed, but it only takes one success to change everything.

In your personal life, take risks. I debated starting online writing for ages. What if I can’t write enough? Why should anyone listen to me? What if people hate what I have to say?

//pagead2.googlesyndication.com/pagead/js/adsbygoogle.js

(adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({});

Not every post has been a hit, but the successes have kept me going and the failures have made me better.

So text him first. Strike up a conversation with a stranger. Dare to be average at new experiences. Worst case scenario, you fail, your life probably doesn’t change that much, and you learn how to do better next time.

Best case scenario, you succeed.

Focusing on success is limiting, and leads to failure. A focus on failure is a focus on self-improvement, and leads to success.

If you are never failing, you are never improving.

3 Ways You Can Strive to Fail

Taking risks is important, but you don’t need to make all-or-nothing decisions. There are ways to embrace failure in your everyday life.

1. Do something you suck at

I used to be an absolutely terrible cook. I was terrified of cooking because, well, I didn’t really know how. I was afraid of making bad food.

It turns out, I made a lot of bad food, and forced myself to eat it. But I got better, slowly, over time. I learned which spices go well together. I learned to chop vegetables in 2 minutes instead of 20. Repeated failure took me from Kraft mac n’ cheese to Four cheese fettuccine alfredo.

Embrace the fact that you don’t always need to be good at things, and you may discover new activities you enjoy. As Virgil Thomson said “Try a thing you haven’t done three times. Once, to get over the fear of doing it. Twice, to learn how to do it. And a third time to figure out whether you like it or not.”

See Also: 3 Ways On How To Turn The Fear Of Failure Into An Asset

2. Make things better

Take a project you worked on recently. In an ideal world, what would have done to make it better?

When I started as a professional writer at a marketing agency, I went through all of our existing content and made notes on how I thought I could make improvements. I didn’t do that because I expected recognition: I did it because I wanted to learn.

It turns out, the project picked up steam and is getting used, but it very easily might not have. The difference between good work and outstanding work is enormous. If outstanding work were easy to achieve, everyone would do it.

Embrace the challenge. Embrace the inevitability that you will fail – sometimes. Learn from your failures, and celebrate the successes that come from them.

3. Embrace a growth environment

If you are constantly punished for failures, you’ll never be able to grow.

An environment that understands the importance of mistakes is critical for growth.

In his famous Nike commercial, Michael Jordan once said “I’ve missed more than 9000 shots in my career. I’ve lost almost 300 games. 26 times, I’ve been trusted to take the game winning shot and missed. I’ve failed over and over and over again in my life. And that is why I succeed.”

Jordan embodied striving for failure, but he also gained from those around him – he was still trusted to take 25 game losing shots after missing his first chance.

Forget focusing on success. Focus on failure and self-improvement. Ask yourself this: are you playing or practicing?

5 Top Weird Brain Facts

//pagead2.googlesyndication.com/pagead/js/adsbygoogle.js

(adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({});

Research and exploration isn’t something which has much to do with our day to day life. I think it should. We tend to look elsewhere for our inspiration. Typically to the very, very big, to understand where we fit into the universe or the very, very small, to find out how everything fits together!

I, however, take continual delight in knowing that there is so much of our seemingly mundane daily life which remains largely unexplained. We know so little about us.

We are so strange. So much so that I’m pretty sure we just gave up trying to work ourselves out. A poorly paced evolution has left our brains wired up in weird ways.

We often do things which are totally illogical and counterintuitive things. We produce the unexpected from the seemingly mundane situations. What would you think if I told you that you don’t see, learn, feel or heal like you think you do?

//pagead2.googlesyndication.com/pagead/js/adsbygoogle.js

(adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({});

Here is a list of the top weird things our brains do:

1. We don’t know ourselves like we think we know ourselves.

We’ve all done one of those personality tests. There are hundreds of fake ones floating around the internet.

You get that little booklet which sums you up… we tend do think “Wow! That’s me. So clever how they did that!” In truth, we are very likely to say the exact same thing we were handed a fluffy, vague description.

It’s called the Forer Effect – and it makes advertisers quite giddy.

2. We don’t learn like we think we learn.

There is a strong relationship between our imagination and muscle memory. Imagining doing something successfully is just as good as, and sometimes even better than actually doing it.

If you are learning to play the piano, visualising the keys – seeing your hands move through the chords is just as good as sitting down in front of the piano. One can only hope the drummer next door reads this.

3. We don’t see like we think we see.

Our visual cortex forms a map of the world around us from the electrical signals form our eyes. No one has ever seen the world any other way.

The more you think about, the more unsettling the idea becomes. Optical illusions bring this idea home for us. Whenever there is a disparity between actual objective reality (lines on the page) and what we visually expect to see, we get all tied up in knot.

Do you remember the movie “The Matrix?” and the more we think about it, the more we realise what a horrible actor Keanu Reeves is.

4. We don’t feel like we think we feel.

We’ve heard of the stories of amputees who still experience their missing limb, like it’s still there. Google “The Phantom Limb Experiment” the same experience can be reproduced in non-amputees. Pretty strange.

If you hid your hand under the table and placed a fake plastic on the table in front of you next to your other hand. Then, have someone touch both in the same way for a while – then maybe hit the fake one with a large mallet. You’d feel the pain as if it was your real hand.

Don’t be creepy about the hand touching. This is science.

5. We don’t heal like we think we heal.

brain healing body

The reason pharmaceutics have to test their new drugs against sugar pills or saline solutions (salt water) is because sugar pills and salt water work to cure lots of things! Just the belief that something works, means that it does.

And here’s the rub. As the drugs get better, then more people are treated successfully, the more we believe in the drugs, the stronger the placebo effect gets – the harder it is to prove that they work better than sugar and salt!

How to Find a Good Mechanic in the Age of Social Media

//pagead2.googlesyndication.com/pagead/js/adsbygoogle.js

(adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({});

Finding a skilled and reliable mechanic isn’t easy, and it can be stressful to be faced with a task of choosing someone you trust to fix only what’s broken, and at a reasonable price. The good news is that the Internet and social media can be a helpful tool in finding a trustworthy and experienced mechanic when you need one.

Here’s how to vet a new mechanic in the age of social media, and how to hold on to a good mechanic once you have found him.

What to Look for in a Mechanic

auto mechanic

Finding a reputable automotive service center online is a good place to start, but you’ll need to drill down deeper than positive reviews for the business itself. Auto repair shops employ multiple mechanics so taking your vehicle into the best service center in town won’t do you any good if your vehicle is assigned to a new technician in training. You’ll need to find out who the star players are in this service department.

//pagead2.googlesyndication.com/pagead/js/adsbygoogle.js

(adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({});

Good technicians often certify themselves through the ASE (Automotive Service Excellence) program. This testing platform allows mechanics to display their knowledge in specialized areas.

//c.amazon-adsystem.com/aax2/getads.js

//<![CDATA[
aax_getad_mpb({
"slot_uuid":"16dcbcd0-2124-4a85-9abe-c263dd9084e5"
});
//]]>

However, as an auto mechanic, I can tell you there’s no substitute for experience. Mechanics learn something new every day. The more days they spend fixing cars, the more they learn about them. When faced with a complex diagnosis on a complicated car, these veteran mechanics can reach into their bag of experiences to find the answers.

With that said, I’m willing to trade years of experience for pinpoint education on my particular automobile. If I drive a late model Chevy, I would choose a Chevrolet certified technician with three years of experience over a mechanic at an independent facility with 10 years under his belt.

Keep in mind that many dealership-trained mechanics wind up working at independent and franchise auto repair centers later in their careers. When vetting a new mechanic, push for a conversation with him to see if he has ever worked on your specific year, make and model.

//pagead2.googlesyndication.com/pagead/js/adsbygoogle.js

(adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({});

The Tools to Use

Facebook can be a good tool as a first step in finding a mechanic: Ask your friends for recommendations to get you started.

But, keep in mind that your Facebook friend might have a Toyota Corolla that almost fixes itself, while your Cadillac is much more complicated. It’s also possible to have a good experience with a bad mechanic.

//pagead2.googlesyndication.com/pagead/js/adsbygoogle.js

(adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({});

As the saying goes, a broken clock is right at least twice a day. Cross-reference these recommendations from your social media friends with sites like Yelp or Angie’s list that have dedicated sections for auto repair.

But don’t stop there. When vetting a new mechanic, try using additional tools that aren’t as well recognized. As an example, the people at Car Talk have put together a local research tool called The Mechanic Files . Here you can enter your city and state to find out more about shops in your area. This tool is designed to show the good mechanics at the top of the list, as the reviews are listed in descending order of satisfaction.

Another research tool I prefer over the big players is provided by RepairPal. This service also provides location-based information and verified reviews. However, it also supplies important information at a glance.

Some of this data includes the business owner’s name, how long the shop has been open, the number of ASE certified technicians working in the establishment, and the total years of experience.

Hang on to that Technician for Dear Life

automotive technician

//pagead2.googlesyndication.com/pagead/js/adsbygoogle.js

(adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({});

Now that you spent a fair amount of time finding a good mechanic, you don’t want to let him go without a fight. Mechanics often move around in search of the best pay for their skills, so don’t take it for granted that your favorite technician will stay at the same repair shop.

Being a mechanic is a tough job, and it takes a lot of initial training before they see their first paycheck. Not only is the training expensive, but the tools required to work on automobiles cost even more.

To make matters worse, the average mechanic only makes around $37,000 a year. The one thing automotive technicians have on their side is job security. So they are always shopping for the best offer in exchange for their skills.

There are two things that an automotive consumer should do when they find the right mechanic.

First, let them know you appreciate their hard work, professionalism and skill level. The verbal compliments will go a long way, but back up your words with a physical demonstration of sincerity. Take the time to interact when you pick up the vehicle and slide them a monetary tip.

The second thing you want to make clear is that your loyalty lies with the mechanic and not the business. This way when they move to a greener pasture you’ll get an invitation to follow along.

If you maintain your relationship, you’ll be saved from going through the arduous process of finding a trusted technician all over again. And don’t forget to pay it forward—recommend your great find to your friends on social media, so they can benefit from your research.

4 Ways To Overcome Depression Naturally

//pagead2.googlesyndication.com/pagead/js/adsbygoogle.js

(adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({});

Do you want to learn how to overcome depression naturally?

Depression is one of the prevalent issues humans are facing today. In spite of being so ubiquitous in today’s world, there is a lack of awareness on how to tackle this disorder.

Depression is more common in youngsters than the rest of the age groups. Part of its prevalence in youngsters is associated with their inability to cope with life pressure.

Regardless of the reasons, depression is something that wears you out emotionally and mentally. It is a kind of silent killer that consumes you inside and out. What is more frustrating is the fact that people resort to medications.

//pagead2.googlesyndication.com/pagead/js/adsbygoogle.js

(adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({});

Contrary to what people believe, medications like anti-depressants and tranquilizers only worsen the condition rather than doing any good. They only provide a momentary escape from depression but do a serious damage to your health.

The good news is that depression can be treated without resorting to these toxic medications.

Here are ways to overcome depression naturally:

1. Change Your Diet

What we eat has an effect on our state of mind. Similarly, when you are depressed, you have to cope with insomnia and mood swings. Therefore, the first step to treating depression is altering your diet.

When people are depressed, they often start taking fast food in abundance. Due to mood swings, they resort to junk foods that only worsen their health. Similarly, many people indulge in drinking too much of caffeinated drinks that affect their sleep.

Instead, substitute unhealthy food with natural nutrients that can heal your soul. For example, chamomile tea can be a healthier replacement for coffee or tea as it has plenty of apigenin, while serotonin-rich chocolates boost your mood and gives you instant energy.

2. Reinforce a Sleeping Pattern

sleeping pattern

Depression has a direct effect on your sleep. When you are feeling the blues, you have to force yourself to sleep. Your constant battle with insomnia results in restlessness and agitation. But you can improve your sleep cycle with little efforts.

To begin with, you need to tweak changes in your lifestyle pattern. Start by making a routine of your sleep. Avoid the urge to take short naps during the day as it will affect your mood and interrupt your night sleep.

For nighttime, you should disconnect yourself from distracting sources such as mobile phone and music players. Make sure your bedroom is as tranquil as possible to induce sleep.

3. Vent Out Your Negativity

Depression can be overwhelming and it can make you feel emotionally exhausted after a time. Therefore, it is important that you vent out the contained frustration in a natural way.

For example, you can start writing everything that comes to your mind. Similarly, you can find a place where you can shout out loud to release your anger. If you feel comfortable, you can even talk to a friend and vent out the negativity.

Using these techniques will help you naturally let out the negative energies and you will end up feeling much better.

Performing yoga is another effective natural therapy to naturally help you fight depression. Yoga is a multifaceted activity that heals you in more than one way. Not only does it release the negative energies from your body, it also improves your focus and ensures good health.

Unlike antidepressants, mediation provides a natural escape from depression and it stops the odds of a relapse of depression.

Hopefully, the above tips will help you ease your way out of depression without having to resort to self-prescribed pills.
