Bura’a, The Roof of Arabia by robertkamensek by robertkamensek

Bura’a Wildlife Sanctuary, Yemen
The most typical feature of the whole central highland is the terraces that succeed each other in rather small ribbons up to the very top of the mountains. To build those terraces that look like big steps leading to the highest mountain peaks many generations have laboured. It is known from records that Oueen Arwa, who lived in the 11th century, spent an entire yearly budget to help farmers restore and expand terraces. The several metre high stone walls, protecting the precious soil from being washed away during the rainy months, need to be maintained constantly.Unfortunately many terraces have already been abandoned because the effort to cultivate does not always equal the yield. Peeks rise to an altitude of 3700m Outstretched basins in the highlands are completely surrounded by mountains…

Mandapa, Banteay Srei by allenfotowild by allenfotowild

Banteay Srei is an exquisite small temple complex from the 10th century, dedicated to the Hindu god, Shiva. It is also called ‘Pavilion of the Women’ for the small scale of its size and beautiful carvings of such detail that they may have been carved by the small hands of women. It is built of red sandstone, a material that can be carved into elaborate decorations, and the carvings at Banteay Srei are said to be some of the finest stone carving anywhere on earth. This view shows the mandapa (entrance hall to the main sanctuary).
