Lower Antelope Canyon, Page Arizona.
In the canyons the light changes quickly as the sun travels through the day. Both the quality of light and the direction that it is reflected from the walls affect the color in the canyons. The sandstone inside the canyon is, essentially, the same color as it is outside in direct sunlight, a dull reddish orangey brown, but the conditions inside the slot canyons are totally different because of light.
Due to the time of the day, direct light, shadows, deflected and reflected light and something called Rayleigh scattering, light in the canyon is manipulated by the sun and the blue sky above. In part of the canyon where there is less influence from direct sunlight the blue spectrum is more represented, and due to the scattering of the shorter wave length light, blue, it can show up in the photos as a beautiful color. There was only a matter of a few minutes while I was in the canyon that I was able to get some photos with this effect evident clearly.
I cooled down the white balance to enhance its effect, but didn’t add any color to this photo.
