France From The Plane by axle88 by axle88

Let me tell you the story how I use an entire airplane as my tripod!
On the 13th march 2016 I took advantage from my window seat on a Easyjet plane to Gatwick to take some night “airplanescapes”. I was coming back from my Cinque Terre and Golfo dei Poeti adventure in Liguria, Italy, and from Linate Milan and just right after sitting on my window view I’ve decided to look out after the take off, and the beautiful clear sky was there and my mind took advantage of that chance and I grabbed my camera and started shooting! I decided straight away that this was the right time with the moon and Orion constellation showing in the sky closely to get framed. Most of the sky photographers plan to take shots of the Orion constellation months ahead, avoiding the moon on the sky for obviously purposes. The last thing to “fight” for them is the weather, not always merciful on the land. So I put my jacket to cover the window to see how much reflection I could took away. Then after checking with the app PhotoPills where the moon was going to be in 30 minutes to get it on the frame, I plug the Triggertrap to my iphone and launched the app so I would have a total control of the camera covered by my jacket. Few test shot to focus the stars and settled my camera holding it against the window, assuring that there were no light leak from the inside of the airplane. Settled for 10 shots each one to merge them together to get a noiseless shot, at 1 second and 5000 ISO with and aperture of F/2.8, my Nikon D750 with the 17-35 AF-S D 2.8 did a great job together with the pilot of the airplane, the steadiest tripod in the sky!
