Island Peaks by PaulZizkaPhoto by PaulZizkaPhoto

I’m sure many landscape photographers can relate to the story behind this one. It was such a dreary day out, but I was determined to get out no matter what, because it had been a little while since I had spent some time in the field.
The more I climbed through the forest, the more I thought “why do I bother?”, as the clouds grew thicker and the drizzle turned to rain. But for some reason, I kept putting a foot in front of the other and tried hard to keep my expectations low, very low. At least I’m getting some good exercise out of this…
As I got to the highest point of the mountain, I realized I had climbed through an inversion. Just barely – I stood perhaps 50 metres above the clouds. And in front of me unfolded a version of Mount Rundle unlike anything I had seen before. The clouds rushed around it like a river, and directly above it shone a solar halo.
All that to say: bad weather often has the potential to lead to conditions that are a lot more unique than does pleasant weather. Most of the time you’ll come home with macro/abstract images of tree branches and lichen, but once in a while, you’ll get lucky.
