I’m standing on the edge of this powerful lake, in a stunning part of the Torres del Paine National Park. The sun is setting and the view of soaring mountains, the remains of a massive volcano, humbles me with its majesty.

In this moment, I’m neither observer nor landscape photographer, but serenely connected to both the landscape and myself. I’m in the midst of a creative meditation, on a 4 week tour of Patagonia.

Having captured this location on a previous tour and found my composition to be unbalanced and a little clumsy, I was determined to do it justice this year – what Chile’s breathtaking jewel deserves. With the setting sun I captured the perfect sun flare that brings balance to the scene and harmonies the roaring Paine River destine for the impressive Salto Grande.

Composition is one of the most important skills for any photographer to learn. Straight up. It’s all about how to decide what to include and exclude from your photo, and how to arrange it all to create the strongest image possible.
