Unexpected by PerriSchelat by PerriSchelat

Last Spring I went to the Tetons for wildflower season. While there are no wildflowers at the beaver pond, I went anyway to experiment with the unexpected.
I have seen this location, which is tiny to begin with, lined up with 15-20 photographers for sunrise. Shoulder to shoulder tripods intertwined. I photographed then too, but I decided to run down at sunset to try the unexpected. As I suspected I would, I had the place to myself with the exception of a couple of tourists carrying iPhones.
I envisioned this scene to look pretty much as you see it here and wondered why people only photograph it at sunrise, other than the obvious, sometimes we behave like sheep and follow the expected. I understand that at sunrise you get front light on the peaks and illuminated clouds. Sunset you get more of a silhouetted scene. That said, it is possible to get side light, or a sunbeam passing through behind the peaks.
I used a 5 stop ND in this shot for a 2 minute exposure which explains the silky cloud movement. The sky was hazy and cloud covered, but there was enough light trying to burn through to make some nice dramatic light reflecting in the clouds.
