If there was ever a time where I could just sit back, relax, and enjoy a view, then this certainly was it. While not far from the road (you can see the tail lights of a car sweeping around towards the middle of the image), being up on this ridge felt like being in the middle of nowhere. While traversing Southern Utah with my friend Nathaniel, we ended the trip with a brief stop in Zion. There was barely a cloud in the sky, but when you are in a place as beautiful as this, it doesn’t matter. As we drove into the park we were trying to figure out where and what to shoot. A familiar scene popped out to me and for a moment we thought about going to photograph it, but last minute decided to wander somewhere else nearby. After climbing up this sandstone ridge that surely was much steeper than I first thought and reaching the “summit” I stopped and looked around at the scenery. There was an arch visible in the distance, and some interesting looking narrow slots below, perhaps to return to in the future. The view was quite beautiful, and something I don’t remember seeing in photos before. We were even treated to the sight of desert bighorns trudging up the ridge across from us. Neither of us could get any amazing shots of the animals, but it was definitely a nice gift to see. At that moment I began to think of the amazing things these beautiful creatures see on a daily basis. Their capabilities to climb cliffs and ledges with ease high above the roads and trails always have amazed me. Just when I thought I was done taking any photos, I began my way back down and just kinda stopped in my tracks. The soft colors of twilight bringing on red and magenta hues into the sandstone and a beautiful peak in the center of it all. I sat down on the rocks and took the camera out of my pack for one last shot. While there was no clouds or incredible sunset over this scene, the calmness and thoughts of all the incredible places I had been the days prior made this one of my favorite shots of the trip. It was a perfect way to end an already great trip, and even better to do so in one of my favorite national parks.
