Driftwood by jimkucharek by jimkucharek

I have watched the sun set hundreds of times. I have gotten better at looking at the sky in the afternoon and seeing the possibilities for great colors in the evenings. That said, I still am often surprised by what actually happens.

This image is one example of exactly that. The Western sky had some of the most interesting cloud banks I have ever seen. There was lots of wind. Parts of the sky near the horizon was hidden by thick, roiling cloud banks, but the area above that layer was occupied by fast-moving, smaller clouds. With these elements, I thought I was going to see something really colorful at sunset. Surprise. While the light was still beautiful and interesting, it was mostly clouds in shades of deep yellow set against patches of blue sky. You never know what you’re going to get (Forest Gump).
