2A Design has recently completed a surprising small and low cost house on a tiny plot, in a rural village next to Rennes (France).

How to fit such a program on a so small parcel of land located 1.50m above the street ? How could we reduce the cost and the building period of the project?
The budget of this construction is as small as the building plot ! The program is as complex as the configuration of the parcel !

In order to give the best response to the client, 2A Design chooses to built this house with shipping containers (B3 Ecodesign concept). The house has been prefabricated in a factory then moved on the site and achieved in approximately three months.  The container dimensions fits exactly with the buildable zone of the plot !

The project is sliced in 3 levels. Each level is a 100sqm area. The superpostion of those different sequencies shape the house. Now we are able on this little plot to organize a complete program of the desired urban villa.

The first level, the ground one , is more technical : one parking zone for two cars, the covered entrance and the technical rooms; a sewing studio and a laundry.

The shared life stand on the first level, the garden one. We can find there a comfortable living room, the main room of the house.
The main volume of the house presents two glass facades.   The first face is above the street. The house take part in the life of the street. The other face, looking at the small garden, is completely transparent too.

By its small dimensions, the garden look like a patio, a private room without ceilling, open to the sky. We are there hided from the wind and the views from the neighborhood. You can then enjoy the patio for a comfortable chilling session! The last level, is another intimate space. The parental room is widely openened on a large roof terrasse. This space is a kind of solarium, maybe the most qualitative place of the house. From there, you can enjoy a view from the village to the natural landscape of the country. Giving back the roof of the villa to its inhabitants is the only way to propose large outdoor spaces on a so small plot. The terrasse is althoug planted with trees. We forget then that the house doesn’t have a real garden.

Beat Procrastination With “Temptation Bundling”

Whether it’s jogging or studying for a final, it’s common to motivate yourself with a reward for completing tasks you dread doing. The old carrot-and-stick method can work, but researcher Katy Milkman suggests a better version: temptation bundling.

If you want to learn how I process my images, my workflow and lighting techniques.

As you may or may not know, I am not one for working with other people when it comes to photography. I have always preferred to go out, on my own, and spend my time in nature without interruption or conversation. But occasionally, when out taking photos, you bump into someone you really click with and it transforms your time into something much lovelier than if you had spent it in silence.

So as I was standing on the ledge that looks down over the whole of Durdle Door, watching the chav’s destroy the beach with their fires and empty cans of lager, I was ‘interrupted’ by a beautiful girl who I soon learned was of Polish origin. She was one of the happiest, smiliest people I had met and we started talking about photography and other things. Her boyfriend was down at Durdle Door too, and he had disappeared over to the other side to get some images. So this girl and I just chatted, and laughed. As I said earlier, I don’t normally like spending my photography time with other photographers, but I really enjoyed this girls company. She was warm and fun and that is something you rarely find with other image takers. We watched and criticised the idiots that littered the beach, throwing empty beer cans at each other, climbing the rock face and lighting fires. I don’t know what it is about people like that, who feel the need to destroy places of such unbelievable beauty. Surely, if you want to get drunk and start fires, you could do that anywhere. Why do it at a place like Durdle Door? Still, this place has survived the last 100 billion or so years, so I am sure a bunch of yobs won’t scare it much.

By the time we checked our watches, having watched the sun make its full descent behind the distant hills, we had been talking for well over an hour. The majority of people had disappeared, including my new friends boyfriend, and we decided to make our way up the ever steepening hill towards the car park. By the time we got there, we were both out of breath and we said our goodbyes. For the first time in a while, I actually enjoyed the company of another photographer. She made me smile, made me laugh and having since checked out her portfolio, she is one hell of a good photographer.
