From the architect. At the onset of this project, when we asked the clients what type of house they were interested in, they replied “a simple house, like a lifeguard tower”.
We designed a one story house spread across a corner lot. Two layers of exposed concrete comprise floor and ceiling with white stucco walls enveloping the house. Sliding the upper plane forward allowed for light penetration at the core of the house as well as air circulation. Between the two layers lies a rectangular tube, separating while connecting inside form out. This unique space houses an entry corridor and art studio.
The house is divided in a non traditional manner. In place of public vs. private spaces we divided the house by daily functions. Daytime space: kitchen, living room, porch and garden. Nighttime space: children’s bedrooms surrounding a family space, family bath, master bedroom and studio.
MIMA Light is a private residence designed by MIMA. It is located in Portugal. MIMA Light by MIMA: “MIMA Light is the ultimate achievement in modular construction, combining an outstanding lightness with an iconic and minimal image. This home seems to levitate above the ground due to the lining of the base with mirrors. Inspired by the minimalist sculpture of artists such as Donald Judd, John McCracken and Robert Morris,..

We all strive for a much simpler life. For most of us, our goal is to work less, enjoy life more, stress less and just chill. Unfortunately for too many of us, that’s all a pipe dream. We work long hours and too hard at jobs we don’t like or don’t bring us satisfaction, barely pay the bills and at the end of the day, week and month, we’re stressed and broke. We all really just want a simpler life but how?
Most of us create problems in our minds that aren’t even there. They don’t exist at all. We made them up. Sounds silly but it’s so true. We worry for nothing. Cutting that out will certainly aid in making life simpler. Here are 10 other ways to do that.
Turn your frown upside down. As soon as you do this, immediately your mood will lift and whatever it is that is causing you frustration or sadness at the moment will dissipate and you will be happier and a little more lighthearted. Really. Try it.
We own so much stuff that we don’t need. So much stuff. You have 25 belts, surely you don’t need another one. And another watch? Come on. Stop collecting junk. That s all it ends up being in a year from now.
We watch the news, we get depressed. Quick fix, stop watching the news. Get out and go for a walk, sit on the porch and look at the stars, read a good book. take up painting or woodworking or something. Do something other than watch TV.
Phones, iPad, computers and all other electronic gadgets, turn them off. Maybe even for an hour a day. For that hour, go relax, meditate, sit with a friend and chat. There are so many other things you can do that will calm your mind and allow you to chill out and enjoy life.
Easier said than done. I know. But next time you find yourself worrying about something that hasn’t even happened yet stop yourself immediately and go back to #1. Remember we are in control of our mind and our thoughts. Tell your mind to stop thinking ridiculous things, like things that don’t exist that cause us to worry for nothing.
Or another delectable treat. How often do you treat yourself to little things? little things you used to before an internet site told you it was bad for you. Just go have ice cream or whatever little treat you want to indulge in. It’s ok to have treats every now and then. Know your limit, that’s all.
Don’t be afraid to say no more often. We say yes to too many things and at the end of the day we get mad at ourselves for saying yes when we should have said no. Just say no. It’s ok. Whoever you said no to will still love you. They’ll also have more respect for you too.
Yes to yourself. Yes to treating yourself to an hour or a day to yourself. Yes to happier more fun things to do. Yes to random road trips and walks at the lake. Don’t be afraid to go out and do things that you love to do, not what every body else loves to do.
Naps are great. Have more of those. Even lying down for 15 minutes, if that’s all the time you have, is a great little quick fix if your body is telling you it’s time to decompress. Listen closely. Your body or your mind, will surely tell you when it’s time to go lay down. Do it. Don’t fight it. Go lay down.
Really, if only for an hour. Listen to music, stare out the window, close your eyes and zone out. Just do nothing. Just be. Let your thought s come and go. Enjoy the moment, enjoy being you.
Life doesn’t always have to be go go go and full of stress. Take time to enjoy and decompress. You’ll be happier.

This is a Portrait of Eleonora di Toledo by Bronzino, from ca. 1545. The details of this work is astonishing. Can you imagine that this is almost a 500 year old painting?
