12 Simple Rules Of Staying Safe On A First Date

Dating is one the most fun experiences in life, but in today’s climate, it can also be one of the most worrying for you and for those who care about you. If you’re dating somebody from your circle of friends, it’s easier to have people’s mind at ease. But what if you’re on a first date with somebody relatively new or somebody you don’t know so much about?

Here are the twelve simple rules of staying safe on a first date.

Tell A Friend Your Plans

Make sure that a friend or family member knows exactly what your plans are for the evening. If they don’t hear from you when they expect to, then they can start to raise the alarm that something might be wrong.

Go Somewhere Public

On a first date, it’s particularly important to arrange to meet somewhere very public, like a park or a coffee shop. If your date wants you to go straight to their home for your first meeting, then you should be apprehensive about their intentions.

Take Your Mobile

This seems like an obvious tip, but absolutely make sure that you take your phone with you wherever you go. You can use it to text that the date is going well, but you can also use it for more serious reasons if something feels wrong.

Don’t Be Afraid To Leave

If something about the date doesn’t seem right to you, then do not hesitate to get up and leave. You don’t owe your date anything, especially if they are making you feel uncomfortable. Just excuse yourself and head for the door!

Pre-Plan Your Route

Make sure that you know exactly how to get to and from your date location. You should not rely on somebody else to pick you up or take you home, especially if you want to be out of their company quickly!

Eyes On Your Drink

Keep one hand and one eye on your drink at all times during the date, and never leave it unaccompanied to go to the bathroom etc. It might seem like a cynical thing to do, but you can never be too sure with a relative stranger.

Don’t Meet At Home Or Work

Don’t arrange the date to start from your home or your workplace, as by the end of the night you might realize that you have gone out with somebody who you don’t want knowing such personal information.

Don’t Drink Too Much

Of course, it’s a woman’s prerogative to drink however much she wants. However, on a first date, in particular, it is always good to have all of your wits about you, just in case any advances are made that you don’t want.

Don’t Be Driven Home

Don’t let your date drive you home. You might not want to reveal your home address this early on, and you also don’t want thr possibility of them driving you to a place that you are unfamiliar with.

Don’t Go Home With Them

It seems a bit old fashioned to tell someone not go home with their date after the first meeting in 2017, but if there is a strong physical attraction, it will still be there on the second or third date when you know them better.

Get A Friend To Call

It’s always a good idea to get a friend to call you halfway through the date just to check up on you. If it is going well, they will be reassured and your date will know that somebody is waiting up for you. And if your date isn’t going well, then their call can be your reason to leave.

Kiss Outside The Car

If you feel like you want to smooch on the first date, then do so outside of the car so that you aren’t at risk of doors being locked or things being taken too far in the semi-privacy of a vehicle.

Can’t capture that elusive eight hours of sleep?  Waking up in the middle of the night restless?  It may be what you’re eating during the day that is stopping you.  Here are seven things that may be robbing you of the sleep you need.  And sleep is crucial for your well-being.

  1.  Caffeine.  This may be a no-brainer, but many are surprised by how soon they should stop drinking caffeinated beverages.  It is suggested that you stop after lunch if you want to get a good night’s rest.  Also, keep in mind that foods like chocolate also contain caffeine.
  2. High Fat Foods.  These have been linked to poor quality of sleep. Fat triggers the build up of stomach acids that, when lying down, can cause uncomfortable acid reflux. A high fat diet also interferes with the production of orexin, one of the neurotransmitters that helps regulate your sleep/wake cycle along with melatonin.
  3. Water.  If you want to avoid middle-of-the night bathroom trips, it is good to refrain from drinking too much water late at night.  Keep in mind that some foods like watermelon, tea, parsley and even decaffeinated coffee contain diuretics that push more water through your system as well.
  4. Alcohol. Alcohol may help you to fall asleep faster but you are most likely to wake in the middle of the night unable to go back to sleep.  It also interferes with REM sleep, the restorative part of the sleep cycle.  This can cause you to wake feeling as if you haven’t rested at all.  Aim for one glass of wine with dinner, several hours before you go to bed.  Moderation will save your sleep quality.
  5. Spicy Foods. Some like it hot – but it isn’t good for sleep.  Spicy foods eaten close to bedtime are surefire way to suffer from heartburn when you lay down.  Stomach acids can creep up into the esophagus when you are in a prone position, which can lead to painful discomfort during sleep.  If you like spicy, eat it for lunch so your stomach has time to settle.

If you have avoided all these on my list and are still struggling to get a good night’s sleep, it may be time to look at what you are sleeping on.  Sometimes simply upgrading your mattress (say, adding a tempurpedic topper) or getting a new one when your mattress is old will help a lot.  If you have tried everything, you may be suffering from a sleep disorder.  Contact your local sleep clinic for a possible sleep study.  Sleep is crucial to our well-being and sometimes professional help may be needed.

The Magic of Being Held By the World

Right now, as you read this article, you are being held up by an invisible, magic web.

Consider the following, with gratitude in your heart:

You are reading an article written for you by me, sent across the Internet thanks to the work of thousands and thousands of engineers and power workers and workers in computer factories, using a computer device produced by thousands of people around the world.

You are alive because you ate food and drink produced and delivered and served by thousands of people. You have shelter built by thousands of people (when you consider the manufacturing process), powered by a power system where thousands of people work every day, with water coming to you produced by thousands of people, cable (or Internet) entertainment streamed to you that was produced by millions of people. Your furniture, clothes, appliances, car, roads, work buildings, city were all built by millions of people.

When you were born, you were incapable of living without the support of your family, who fed, clothed, sheltered you, changed your diapers, kept you alive every single day. They were supported by many others, and then you were educated by many more. You were raised by a village, no matter what your childhood was like.

Your entire existence has been supported by millions of people, for your whole life, including right now.

And it’s not just your physical existence: your thoughts have been influenced by writers, pundits, TV shows, films, music, educators, friends and family, the work you do with others, politicians and government, philosophers and religious figures, the environment you live in. What you think and who you are is not something you just invented, it has been created by everyone and everything around you.

You have been co-created by every other human being alive, by the entire world. And your actions have co-created those around you as well.

You are held up by an invisible, magic web of human lives and thought, of food and shelter and electricity and devices, of human creation and nature and the cosmos around you.

We co-create each other, every moment. And we take it all for granted.

The only reasonable response to this realization is gratitude. Applause. Joy.

We are all connected, and our actions matter. How can you co-create the world around you today? What loving action can you take right now, to care for others around you, to make their lives better? What can you do to appreciate and show gratitude for those who have supported you?

Fill your heart with love for those who have created you, and fill their lives with your love so you can create something amazing for them.
