How Old Is Your Soul?

Have you felt lonely and misunderstood since you were a child? Do you still feel that way? Are you spiritually inclined? Do the material wealth has no meaning for you? Then, you might be an old soul. But what is this? Eckhart Tolle and many others have written about the subject. To put it very simple, an old soul is a person whom has learned from past incarnations, or lives. He/she is approaching life with a greater sense of knowledge and wisdom.

Old souls have a connection with the universe, with nature, and that’s why they will change the world. But don’t despair if you are not one. You will be someday, and until then you can still change the world.

3 Ways To Shut Your Ego Up

Many of us struggle, not only with the definition of ego, but also of whether or not we are acting from the ego or from the heart. Those who insist their actions were not based on ego, most likely are either in denial or they simply don’t know what it means to act from a place of ego.

Ego is the act of putting importance on your self worth or self esteem. We want people to acknowledge and see how magnificent we are, or how grand our gesture was. That would be ego. Even athletes or competitors who are doing grand things do it for the love of it, the medal or award may or not come (at least most of them do would be my guess). They do what they do because it drives them, it’s their passion and they love it.

egoSo when our ego rears its ugly head, how do we silence it or keep it in check? Here are some ways to tame the monster and feel good about yourself in a heart centered sort of way.

1. Why are you doing this?

Whatever it is that you are doing, whether it be baking cookies for your neighbour or holding the door open for people. What big or little thing are you doing or did you just do and why did you do it? Were you looking for recognition and appreciation? If it was something you did from your heart, tell your ego to shut up and remind it that it was your decision, from your heart, to do this nice kind act. You did it because you wanted to, not because it was expected from you or demanded from you. Are you doing business or acting from a place of love. All too often we perform tasks at work that we aren’t recognized for or appreciated for. It’s shitty when that happens but remember, you are at work. It’s your job, it’s business.

2. Who doesn’t appreciate you?

Most of us like to be appreciated. It’s a great feeling to know that your actions don’t go unnoticed and someone completely loves and appreciates you for it. Unfortunately, many of us live or work where we are seriously underappreciated so we actually crave it. We long for it. Can’t one person just say thank you? I get it. It’s frustrating. Remind yourself of your surroundings. Are the people you are dealing with operating from an entitled state? Do they always expect things from you? Maybe it’s time to cut back on some of the things you do that aren’t expected of you but you do them anyway. Maybe some of these people can do these things themselves and it’s about time they did. Maybe some of these people simply don’t know how to show true appreciation or are embarrassed because they can’t do or be the things that you do. If you’re doing these things out of love, keep doing them.

3. We are all equally important in this big wide world.

We like to think we are more important than the other guy. We like to think because we are more educated, better dressed or better at communication, we are better than the other guy. We want people, everyone in fact, to recognize the fact that we are awesome and magnificent. Reality check for you. We are ALL important and magnificent. Even the homeless guy at the corner of the street. He’s just as important as you are. remember we are all in this together and our purpose should be to love each other and treat each other with the same level of respect. You aren’t any more important than anyone else.

Ego truly is such an ugly thing and we all desperately long to shut it up but at times, it’s difficult. Why can’t anyone appreciate us ever? The bottom line? Give yourself a pat on the back or a big hug and remind yourself of the awesome act you just performed or the great job you did. And then go celebrate yourself.

How To Be The Hero Of Your Own Story

If you feel your life is on a boring and mind-numbing repeat day after day with no end in sight, it’s time to make changes and be the hero of your own story.

“One way to get the most out of life is to look upon it as an adventure”

William Feather

When Life is Grim

It’s 6 o’clock in the morning and your alarm is going off. You dread the thought of going to work another day, so in a futile attempt at making the day go away you hit the snooze button. Now it’s 6:09 am and if you don’t hurry and get out of bed you are going to be late for work.

Not that you really care since it is a soul-sucking job anyway, but you do need the money. You look back on your college years and reflect on all the broken promises. You were promised an amazing career if you got your degree. You were promised a good life once you had that diploma in hand.

In reality, life is grim and the future looks bleak. You check out your Facebook page and notice a couple of your friends on vacation; one in Italy the other in Miami. It’s been a long time since you took a vacation. You then check out your Instagram and see that your cousin is expecting a baby, and another friend just bought a house. You still live in your apartment.

After eating breakfast and hopping in the car you arrive at work. Your boss informs you that you got something wrong with your latest report and he expects a new one by this afternoon. More work for you.

You plow away revising the report when you hear a cubicle neighbor on the phone. She is talking to someone and mentions how she has been with the company for over 30 years. You have a mild panic attack as you visualize yourself sitting at this same desk, doing this same mind numbing work for 30.long.years.

That’s enough to break any person, but especially for you who had a vision of what your life was going to be like coming out of college. You were going to conquer the world, instead your world is set on Repeat punctuated by weekends.

be remarkable

You Were Meant to be Remarkable

The fact of the matter is you were born to be great! You weren’t meant to waste your life away at some soul-sucking job.

The problem is over the years you were misled. You had the belief that if you were a good boy, and did what was asked of you, you would be rewarded with a good life. So instead of creating your own story, you lived the life that was expected of you, hoping for the best.

Stop living in other people’s stories! In most of their stories, you aren’t even a secondary character. You are a background character who needs to get a report done. It is time to stop, and it is time to start to be the hero of your own story!

Instead of living a life that was created for you, create your own life! And to be quite honest, you only get one shot at this thing called life and it’s too short to live someone else’s story. Nobody grows up dreaming about becoming R2-D2, or Frodo’s Merry and Pippin.

Everyone wants to be the hero.

Everyone wants to make a difference.

Everyone wants to know at the end of the day that their time on earth mattered.

Create Your Life To Liberate Your Life

I’m here to tell you that this is possible! You can create your own story, and you should be the hero of your own story too!

Growing up, my philosophy in life stated that if I conformed to the wishes of those around me I would have a happy life. It made sense. If I sacrificed my wants and desires for those around me, we should all be happy right?

This philosophy seemed to serve me well. I went to college, got married, and had two kids. I was living the American Dream. Until it all came crashing down.

I was working at a job where my bosses would constantly yell at me. They were high pressure big city types trying to make the same business model work in rural Idaho. I was miserable.

After a much needed vacation, my family and I came home. We went inside and my wife handed me a packet of papers filing for a separation.

I was blind sided. My whole life, I had lived to make others happy! How could this be happening to me?

I was mostly numb during the course of the divorce. I didn’t want to feel. I would go to work then come home and curl up in the fetal position while crying. Just to do it all again the next day.

With time I realized something had to change. I began a journey of discovery. Nothing seemed to resonate with me until I rediscovered the concept of the heroic journey.

The heroic journey is a story arc that has been used throughout the ages. It outlines the cycle a hero goes through in order to complete his quest.

I realized that my life here on this earth is a heroic journey, but I’ve been playing the sidekick in everybody else’s story! As I analyzed the story structure I realized where I was stuck and what I must do to move my story forward as the hero.

be your own hero

Your story

Will you still play minor roles in other people’s stories? Yes, but instead of your primary identity being a reactive one to the lives of those around you, you will proactively create a life that is perfect for you.
When you create your story you set the rules for how you live a successful life.

Maybe going on long vacations is how you define a successful life. Maybe starting your own business is how you define a successful life. Or maybe being a good parent is how you define a successful life.

It honestly doesn’t matter how you define what a successful life is because we all have different definitions of what it means to live life successfully. What is important is that you understand that you can create that life!

See Also: Still Searching for Your Passion? Let’s Find it Once and For All

The liberating idea here is that you don’t have to buy into the idea that you have to get a house, have 2 children, and work a 9-5 job in order for your life to be successful.

Go back to a time when you were a child. What did you wish you could do when you were all grown up? Go back to the time you were in college. How did you dream about changing the world once you graduated? Those are both a couple of good questions to ponder when it comes to writing the rules for your life.

Imagine how it will feel for the first time proactively creating the life that you deserve, instead of reactively living somebody else’s story.

My wife is not a morning person. She would rather jump into a pit of snakes than wake up early. To be honest she doesn’t do her best work in the morning anyway. She does her best work towards the afternoon and evening.

She was working at a job that required her to be at work early. One day, she decided she wasn’t going to live that kind of life and so she started up her own business where she could sleep in as late as she wanted. At this time she may not be making quite as much money as she used to, but her quality of life and levels of happiness have gone through the roof.

See Also: 12 Techniques to Help You Live a Happy and Fulfilled Life

You can design life the way you want it to be. I’m not telling you to go out and quit your job right now and start your own business. I am telling you that deep in your heart, you having burning desires, wants, and ambitions and it’s okay to proactively pursue those things. I am telling you that there are things in your life that are dragging you down, making you miserable and diminishing your levels of happiness. It’s okay to proactively make plans to cut those things out of your life.

Once you realize that you are in charge of your life, everything changes. Instead of dreading the alarm clock in the morning, you look forward to it. Your life is so full of purpose and hope and excitement that getting up in the morning is exhilarating. You may even notice that you don’t need coffee to get you going in the morning!

Instead of your co-workers and friends treating you like a pushover, they respect you as an adult.

The most powerful change though is the fact that your life now has context and meaning. You know what you are doing, why you are doing it, and how it helps you become the best version of you.

That empty feeling you had inside of you…gone. That sense of the future only being grim and bleak…gone. That awful feeling of being stuck…gone. Getting burnt out…gone. Being jealous of your friends who seem to have things figured out…gone.

These hopeless feelings vanish as soon as you give your life greater purpose than just making it through the day.

7 Ways To Feel Good In Your Home

Home is where the heart is – or so they say. Everyone deserves a nice place to come home to at the end of the day’s work, and while many of us are fortunate to have a nice marriage or house to come home to, there are also many readers out there who pay for small apartments, live with roommates or still stay with their parents. We need to feel comfortable where we sleep, and feel good about going there ever y night and waking up there every morning. If discomfort comes in the way of a poor relationship or real estate choice, we can’t do everything about it right away, but there are many little things we can do to improve our situation without having to change much of anything!

home1. Cook comfort food.

Fill up your house with the smells of muffins and the warmth of rice pudding. Call your mom and ask for grandma’s favourite recipes from when you were younger and enjoy a nostalgic taste-bud-trip down memory lane at your dinner table. There’s something to say for comfort foods that make us feel good after or before a long day of eating takeout salads or bland sandwiches at work. Find an hour or two after work to whip up some classic recipes and relax on the couch for dinner. Feel like a kid again !

2. Invest in decor.

Life is getting more and more expensive, but it shouldn’t come at the cost of comfort. If your home is empty of feeling or emotion, or full o f old styles and ideas, try saving a few dollars and buying some new trinkets for your walls and shelves. A few dollars goes a long way at some of the popular home decor stores, and you can build up a style over time at interesting boutique shops. Remember it doesn’t have to happen all at once, but giving your home a makeover might be just what the doctor ordered. Even a few tacky pictures of flowers or generic decorations will give your home a few new colours to work with. Find things that interest you and suit you.

3. Invite people over more often.

Long gone are the days of hearing the doorbell ring because your friends were in the neighbourhood and decided to pop over. With mass communication so available, it is considered just plain strange to have people suddenly arrive at your door! Unfortunately, it’s made our homes turn into these unapproachable areas of isolation and disclosure. Find a day together with your friends where they can come over and enjoy some conversation at your place. You can have a movie night, play cards, or just drink a bottle of wine and catch up on gossip. Use the opportunity to make some of those comfort foods we talked about, or even do it together. If your home is good enough to have people over, you shouldn’t feel uncomfortable in it ever again.

4. Get a nice couch.

This one seems arbitrary but it is all psychological. Well, perhaps you already have a nice couch, but let’s say you don’t. Think of it like this – your bed is where you sleep, your couch is where you eat. Where can you go to just kick back and relax? You need to have a separate area of comfort for those times you are not ready to sleep or eat. There are many places in the world where the only furniture in an apartment is a bed. Enjoy your living room with a nice place to nap, read, or have a coffee. It w ill ensure a well rounded home, providing comfort in every corner.

5. Maximize sunlight.

Use windows to your advantage by keeping them open, enjoying a fresh breeze, and splaying the sun on places where it should be splayed. Put beautiful things where the sun is going to shine to, and emphasize those areas of the room. If you can’t keep the window open for lack of screen, get a screen and enjoy the freedom. If you have a cat, make the area where the sun shines comfortable for your feline – you know they love to sit in the warm sunlight to bask. A happy cat is a happy home.

6. Keep your favourite food and drinks at hand.

Maybe you’re on a diet, so you only keep healthy food at home. Or perhaps your salary does not allow you to provide luxuries to your food stock at home. Try to find a way to keep a couple of snacks around, so that you can really munch out when you want. I consider myself a healthy person, but sometimes all I want to do is sit around and eat cookies – it’s comforting! But what happens when I don’t have any cookies, and all the stores are closed? Well it’s a bit disappointing. Put a bit aside to keep some fun foods around for yourself and guests; ice cream, biscuits, or some nice ice wine or moscato. You’ll thank yourself later that you kept yourself well stocked for some enjoyment.

7. Clean!

This goes without saying, but I bet if I came over to your house now I could find a couple of things to tidy up! Make it a habit to clean your room day by day, fold your clothes, make your bed. Clean as you cook, so you don’t have dishes later. Don’t let dishes stack up, and make sure there are no little puddles of water anywhere in your home. Use a day off to play some loud music and clean the dust out. You can’t believe how good it feels to live somewhere clean. Feel fresh, feel proud, clean your house, make some comfort food and invite friends over. You will love it!

  17. Millions of people are suffering: they want to be loved but they don’t know how to love. And love cannot exist as a monologue; it is a dialogue, a very harmonious dialogue.

  18. They say: Think twice before you jump. I say: Jump first and then think as much as you want!

  19. Whatever you feel, you become. It is your responsibility.

5 New Ways To Eat Breakfast And Skip Mid-Morning Slump

If you find yourself suffering from a slump in the middle of the morning, you need new ways to eat breakfast.

In 1989, I finished high school and left my tiny town in Vermont to head overseas to visit some friends in Finland. After several weeks there, a big thing that stood out was how different their breakfast was.

Instead of so many sweet foods like pancakes or cereal, to start their day in Finland, the foods were more savory and geared toward a balance of protein and carbohydrates instead of the typical American fare of fat and carbohydrates.

This experience changed my thinking toward breakfast and even today, I find myself incorporating what I had for breakfast that summer overseas. Not only will you find it surprisingly delicious, but you’ll find eating this way helps to keep your blood sugar more stable, help you stay alert and you’ll get to skip the mid morning slump you’d usually slugged through after your sugar crash.

Here are 5 ways you can create savory, protein filled breakfasts too.

1. The Finnish eat a hard bread called hapankorppu for breakfast. You can find ‘Finnish Flat bread’ in the crackers section at most grocery stores. (Look in with the Melba Toast!)

Add thinly sliced cucumber and some smoked fish. Salmon or Herring are easy-to-grab choices and don’t require extra cooking in the morning. You can even try some prosciutto if you don’t like fish.

Hapankorppu

2. Use vegetables like thick cucumber slices in place of crackers or toast and add soft cheese like goat cheese and a few sunflower seeds.

3. Steel cut oats are an easy way to have some healthy carbohydrates in the morning and can be cooked overnight in the slow cooker.

Add some salt , pepper and a sprinkle of parmigiana cheese and top with a poached egg for a savory breakfast that is quick and healthy. Add sundried tomatoes or some nutritional yeast as an alternative for healthy add-ins.

4. Slices of tomato that have been put in the broiler with a sprinkle of seasoning and parmigiana cheese create a bubbly treat that starts your day with a shot of vitamin C and fiber.

Have some artisan lettuce with it and throw in a fried egg for a warm and savory breakfast salad.

5. Slices of Rye bread, smoked herring, sliced veggies with some capers and dill is a great way to graze on a Sunday morning without filling up on the sugar.

A platter where everyone can share and make their own combinations is a great way to have brunch and try something new.

You can stop the cycle of eating sugar for breakfast starting with these simple breakfasts. Imagine having sustained energy, cutting out the cravings and feeling alert and awake! Eating like I remember eating in Finland can help you start your day off right. Cheers -Kippis!
