It’s dark and moody on purpose, do me a favor and view it on black.

OK, I’ll agree with all of you… this is one of the most over-photographed places I have ever been to. I know that now and I knew it back in 2008 when I photographed this… but I hadn’t been here before and I wanted to see it for myself. Sue me. Just so happens it turned out to be one of the most insane displays of light I had ever seen.

I decided to reprocess this one recently while down and out with a cold… I think I have an ear infection, too. So if this looks wonky to anyone, blame the fist-fulls of DayQuil I’m jacked up on. But it’s a blend of a few exposures, some dodging and burning, a couple texture adjustments, luminosity masks for tonality control, and some perspective shifting here and there. All in all, only about 45min worth of work went into this one. Not too shabby for being zonked out on cold meds.

Abraham Lake in Canadian Rockies is famous for ice bubbles and other ice formations. During my 3 day camping trip at the lake I was looking for unique compositions. I found this thundered like crack in the ice while hiking across the frozen lake. Using wide angle lens and focus blending technique, I am trying to showcase amazing ice formations and vibrant sunrise. It was an incredible experience to watch the display of warm colours while standing on thick layer of clear, cold ice.
As usually with this type of photos it is the best to view it on the dark background. Thanks and enjoy.

Very intensely watching all the online weather reports, radar, web cams… I decided to chase three severe thunderstorm cells to Crater Lake three days in a row. In 13 years of doing landscape photography full time I don’t know if I have ever witnessed such a spectacular show of light or as much lightening! On this evening, I took 2150 images in about an hour and a half, using two cameras, running back and forth between them. The Ranger next to me said that in 12 years of working at Crater Lake, hiking daily and often hiking the rim on his days off, he had never seen anything like it.

This is a single shot with the Sony A7R and the Canon 14mmL2. One of the hardest things about processing the image was to take the colors that were severely unrealistic to the eye, as well as unrealistic in the initial Raw default settings, and dummy them down, and settle on a point where they would be more believable but not lose the original craziness. I decided to attempt to strike a balance between the ridiculousness of the light we saw that night (which runs the risk of turning some people off) and a more neutral realistic version. We can never please everyone but with some critical help I ended up settling on this version.

During my trip to Iceland got the feeling of being really lucky. Lucky because i could enjoy with my family a gentle weather, beautiful lights, great places, and nice people…

We were with my family visiting Godafoss waterfall in the afternoon, when many people around. After we left things in the housing, i came back expecting not so many people and nice light. I was not alone, but i felt lucky to find there Lauren and her friends, who were playing very nice music. It was an amazing feeling to hear their music together with the music of water falling down. After talking with them, they let me to take some pictures. Until now, this picture i took to Lauren is one of my favourites images in my hard disk.

About the title, there was no rainbow to enjoy, but always i look to this image, it comes to my head the amazing version Israel Kamakawiwoʻole made of the popular song “Somewhere over the rainbow”. I don’t remember what music they were playing, but i like to think (and i am not sure it was not) they were playing that song, as the instrument sounds seemed to me very similar to that in the song by IZ.

Durante mi viaje a Islandia me sentí muy afortunado por poder disfrutar junto a mi familia de un clima no muy adverso, lugares alucinantes, bonitas luces y buena gente.

Pasamos una tarde alrededor de la catarata Godafoss, en una hora en que había muchos visitantes. Nos fuimos al alojamiento y amás tarde volví confiando que no hubiera ya tanta gente. Por suerte, únicamente me encontré con Lauren y sus amigos, cuya música era el complemento ideal para el momento tan magnífico que pasé en Godafoss. Después de hablar un rato con ellos, le pedí a Lauren si podía hacerle una foto. Hasta el momento, esta foto de Lauren es una de mis imágenes favoritas de mi disco duro.

En cuanto al título… no había ningún arco iris a la vista. Pero siempre que veo esta imagen, me viene a la una canción que adoro, la versión que hizo Israel Kamakawiwoʻole de “Somewhere over the rainbow”. No sé qué musica estaban tocando pero me gusta pensar (y no estoy seguro de que no lo fuera :-)) que era esa canción, además de que el sonido de ese instrumento era muy similar al de la canción que comentaba.
