Los buitres son aves rapaces del orden Falconiformes que se alimentan de animales muertos. Por ello, también son conocidos como aves carroñeras o necrófagas.

La peculiaridad de su dieta convierte al buitre, el quebrantahuesos o al alimoche, en especies indispensables para completar la cadena trófica en el ecosistema. Son los encargados de limpiar de cadáveres el territorio, evitando posibles focos de infección.

Otras rapaces como el milano real o el águila real, también consumen carroña en ocasiones, pero no están tan especializadas en su aprovechamiento
