Fall by MAPhoto by MAPhoto

This photograph represents a long connection I have had with this place, far above the crowds and tourists and in front of 9000 sheer feet of icefalls and cliffs. It is also the last image of this peak I’ll ever post. It is the conclusion of my projects here. I hope you enjoy it as much as I do.

On the image: The waterfall in the center above the lake is actually icefall from the glacier above, which happens regularly here, dropping icebergs into the lake which is nearly 1 mile across (for a sense of scale). The sky is the real sky shot at the same time as the rest of the frame, but enhanced in PS. I had to do some minor cloning/warping of a cliff wall in the ULC to keep it out of the frame. All of the other elements are the result of patient scouting and exploration of the area. I once had a mid-winter shot of this tree on my website as well but the snow did not allow me to get the separation I wanted. This comp is better. This was an amazing morning with mist so thick we couldn’t see the peak much of the time, clearing, fortunately, at just the right moment here. The valley at my back was just a wall of clouds. …oh, and now that I see it posted here I realize a couple of edges got oversharpened…

The Sun Pours Down Like Honey by TheNarratographer by TheNarratographer

I decided to head on out and see what kind of a sunset the heavens may greet us with. Suddenly, still a good ten minutes from my destination, the sky burst open and the sun began to melt into the horizon. I knew it wouldn’t last long, decent sunsets this time of year seem to only hang around for a half hour or so. So I floored the car and ended up parked by the side of a farm, with this vista in front of me. Grabbing my gear and the first lens I could find, I quickly wedged the camera on top of the tripod and started to set up. I was rushing so much, at which point I realised I had forgotten my 67mm Lee adapter ring (you know, the adapter that Lee charge you £39.99 for, so that you can use the overpriced filters they have already prised £500 out of your pocket for). So, I dangled the circular polariser on the front of the lens, and didn’t bother getting out my plethora of ND grads. Sadly, I had to HDR this to get anywhere near the huge dynamic range that was visible. The Canons, even the new 50mp one, suffer tremendously with shadow noise and when I tried to pull the shadows back in RAW, the image looked like someone had spilt black pepper on it.

I kind of like this image, but the overall image quality is not that great. Don’t zoom in, it looks so much better from a distance (like from the other side of your living room, on a small screen :)).
