Sliver of Light by natezeman by natezeman

If one ever needed convincing that mother nature is an artist, a trip to Upper Antelope Canyon would suffice. It’s hard to imagine that this slot canyon has been sculpted by only wind, water, sand and time. When experiencing this place in person, I thought to myself that a team of master sculptors with access to all the tools and artificial lighting they needed could not create something so beautiful.

Backlit Storm Clouds by jimkucharek by jimkucharek

Over the years I have come to learn that the absolute best, and most dramatic, light comes when a storm rolls in. The best images generally come at those moments when the storm clouds are just rolling in or when when tail-end of the storm is coming in off the ocean. In this image, you can see all the storm clouds just off the coast, however, the beautiful colors from the setting sun can be seen just behind it all resulting in some very intriguing light.

The Great Fire Of Corfe by TheNarratographer by TheNarratographer

If you want to learn how I process my images, my workflow and lighting techniques.

So this morning, I made my early morning way to a little village in the heart of Dorset named Corfe. It hosts a beautiful idyllic little street, flanked by a pair of hills and an 11th century castle. This castle, which is just out of view in this image, was rebuild shortly after William the Conquerers invasion of southern England.

It was upon one of the two aforementioned hills that I set up to take this image. Id arrived shortly before 6am and had sat in position on this lonely hill, waiting for the sun to break. At first there had been little light at all, nothing but that indigo morning light which renders everything cold and uninviting. I had set the camera to an incredibly ridiculous WB (namely 10,000k) and had waited and waited for the sun to put in an appearance. I was freezing, bored, kept company only by a young calf who had taken a fascination with my morning antics and broken away from the safety of his herd. Eventually, I watched as the sun pulled its way slowly up above the distant hills and wrestled itself free of a resistant black cloud. When it finally did, the light fell in shards into the valley and illuminated the tree’s and clinging fog like fire. The whole of Corfe was set alight. The tree’s burned, the houses smoked, the valley was ablaze.

Bridge to Terabithia by KristinaWilson by KristinaWilson

“We need a place,” she said, “just for us. It would be so secret that we would never tell anyone in the whole world about it.” … She lowered her voice almost to a whisper. “It might be a whole secret country,” she continued, “and you and I would be the rulers of it.” – Katherine Paterson, Bridge to Terabithia
