And no, the statement above is not a typo. I’ve been waiting for the right moment to announce that for an entire month, I’ll be traveling through Bhutan and the first two weeks are dedicated to a very interesting collaborative project that Ben Von Wong and I have dreamed up together. And, I’m excited to say that the project begins today in Paro!
While internet connectivity in Bhutan is spread rather thin, I’ll do my best to keep everyone updated with regular behind the scenes posts as we make our journey through The Land of the Thunder Dragon. Ben also convinced me (though hours and hours of obsessive conversation while pointing at his iPhone screen) to start a Snapchat account, so feel free to follow along with us in real time, as we reveal more details about this very fun and challenging new project. Just bear in mind that I literally just started using Snapchat yesterday so I’m still getting the hang of the clip duration. 😉

Shrouded in Mystery || Tiger’s Nest, Bhutan
This is actually one of the locations that Lee and Patrick from Fstoppers and I used as a lesson while filming Photographing The World. While some of you already know that, something you may not know is that Lee almost got us kicked out of here for flying his DJI Phantom 2! Apparently local building security thought we were using it to spy on people in their tiny apartments. Thankfully I was able to sweet talk my way out of the situation and still come away with the shot!
It’s unbelievable to me that people can live so tightly packed in like this. On the other hand, it’s also really cool to think that a place that most people rarely give a second look, or consider to be so ugly, can look so beautiful and interesting to a photographer. It reminds me of all those years ago when I was wandering the Stockholm Underground and came across what has always been one of my favorite photos in my portfolio, Belly of the Beast. It’s seeing places like this that always remind me that beauty is truly in the eye of the beholder.

Since I’ll be gearing up for Gulf Photo Plus soon, I thought I’d share a new photo of the Dubai skyline. This is also one of the locations I’ll be taking my students during my Urban Landscapes and Post-processing workshops, so I thought sharing this would be double appropriate. It’s a pretty stunning view and I’m really excited to be able to bring everyone up here next weekend!

I love shooting star trails because I feel as though it creates a very powerful mood in my imagery. Obviously, having a strong foreground element is a big part of the puzzle when trying to create an immersive scene, and the Church of the Good Shepherd has become an extremely popular location for this type of photography. Being that it’s such an awesome looking old stone structure, it’s easy to see why so many stargazers and photographers love this spot so much.

Believe it or not, this photo has been sitting in my archives since May of 2014, and over all that time, I just couldn’t seem to find the right inspiration to begin the editing and blending process. This morning though, I woke up with a strong serge of inspiration due to the fact that I’m getting ready to make a exciting announcement on Monday and Riomaggiore plays a small role in it.
Another interesting fact about this photo is that I specifically waited until May to shoot this composition in Riomaggiore. I knew that during that time of year, the sun would set exactly where I wanted it to be in the frame. The epic sunset and incoming swell on the other hand, well, that was just pure luck. 🙂
