This is an area I tried to make a photograph from about a month ago unsuccessfully. The conditions were never right, nor could I really settle on a compositions I truly enjoyed. It’s a beautiful spot of sandstone in the middle of the vast Utah desert. A few cracks in the rock over time created natural windows and arches which had the landscape erode around them allowing them to stand above the landscape. It’s quite interesting the geology of this area. I was able to make a second attempt at creating an image here a few weeks ago, and the conditions were setting up to be just about perfect. The quality of light prior in the day seemed so pure, that when I looked at the camera and looked at the scene, It was tough to tell if one was actually real. The blues were absolutely vivid, and the golden light on the sandstone was brilliantly gold. My friend Nathaniel and I stood in amazement of how beautiful the scene was, and it looked as if it were only going to get better. The clouds swept over the desert landscape, but the ridge to the west was blocking any sight of the horizon. I remained optimistic, and kept searching for compositions as the light changed. Just when we thought it was all said and done, the clouds towards the west fired up in bright pink hues. I scrambled back to this composition I had noticed earlier, and began taking my shot. The colors were perfectly framed through the window, and the crack in the sandstone created a nice lead in to the beautiful scene in the distance. The ridge, ending abruptly to show off Navajo Mountain, matched the crack in the rock almost too perfectly. While I still have other ideas for images from this location, I was quite happy with the images I came back with on this particular trip. I certainly will be back to wander this incredible and vast landscape.
