Zaha Hadid Architects’ Energy Research Campus in Riyadh Opens to the Public

More than 20,000 visitors got a chance to admire Zaha Hadid Architects‘ latest project when the King Abdullah Petroleum Studies and Research Centre (KAPSARC) opened to the public for the first time during Saudi Design Week. The center, located in Riyadh, is a non-profit dedicated to investigating policies that aid in efficient energy usage, and as such, was built with this mission in mind.

KAPSARC is one of several projects designed by Zaha Hadid before her passing, and is the first building by the firm to be awarded LEED platinum certification. The sprawling 17-acre campus is composed of five different buildings that come together as a unified whole, rising as gleaming white pods from the earth. The modular design allows for expansion in the future, as new structures can weave easily into the honeycomb design.

The faceted form of each building creates a flowing geometric lattice up the facades and allows for cutouts to both let in light and minimize construction materials. The individual spaces, though harmonious, have been adapted individually for their functions as a library, computer center, auditorium, research center, and prayer space. “This structural and organizational principle determined KAPSARC’s composition as an amalgamation of crystalline forms that emerge from the desert landscape, evolving to best respond to the environmental conditions and internal program requirements,” writes Zaha Hadid Architects.

Exterior canopied courtyards were carefully planned to minimize exposure to the oppressive desert climate, allowing for community building space where thoughts and ideas can be exchanged in an informal setting. Special “wind catchers” on the roofs of the southern side of the courtyard harness north winds to cool the spaces, which are oriented to allow only indirect sunlight.

The concept of mixing the visiting public with researchers is carried throughout the building, as open plans and spatial layering effects allowing visibility between floors creates a sense of transparency. And with all of KAPSARC’s potable water reused and recycled, solar panels with a capacity of 5,000 megawatts per year, and 30% of construction materials made of recycled content, the architects certainly lived up to the mission of the buildings.

Zaha Hadid Architects, which recently won a Blueprint Award for their Port House in Antwerp, isn’t new to working in Saudi Arabia. The firm is currently working on a wetlands preservation center in Diriyah and a metro station in Riyadh.

Nomadic Couple Spends 6 Years Traveling 80,000 Miles Across Europe in a Van

The Rolling Home Van Life

In the Spring of 2010, partners Lauren Smith and Calum Creasey—founders of The Rolling Home—decided to pack only their essential possessions and to set out on an adventure that would end up being a six-year-long road trip. With little money and a lot of imagination, they bought a Volkswagen T4 and transformed it from a regular transporter van into their dream home.

Starting from their hometown of Buckinghamshire, England, they travelled 80,000 miles (more than 128,000 kilometers) through Europe—from the beaches of Portugal, to the forests of Denmark. Within the self-built van, the couple made sure they had everything they needed, including a compact kitchen complete with a sink, gas hob, and storage.

Earlier this year—with the help of a successful Kickstarter campaign—Smith and Creasey combined their love of travel and journalism by releasing The Rolling Home book. It tells their story through a compilation of photos, words, and illustrations, as well as the stories of others they met along the way. Additionally, the adventurous duo create quarterly journals that “celebrate alternative living.” Now in it’s third edition, each journal “documents stories, interviews, artwork, images, technical knowledge and advice,” with an aim to inspire readers to adopt their own “rolling homes.”

Currently, Smith and Creasey are living in their van on a small holding in Cornwall, England. Found through the Workaway website, here they work part-time building cabins, and gardening. The rest of the time they run their small online store—through Stokedeversince—which sells curated items you might need to start your own on-the-road adventure, as well as their own #vanlife merch.

On this day in 1886, the Statue of Liberty was officially dedicated, becoming a universal symbol of freedom and democracy. In 1924, it was designated as a National Monument and the National Park Service has been caring for the colossal copper statue since 1933. Happy birthday, Lady Liberty! How to Rejuvenate Your Life with These Remarkable Lifestyle Changes

lifestyle changes

The quest for happiness is innate to human beings. Even in ancient times when there was no global connectivity and no axe to grind with one another, civilizations prevailed because of stability and an urge of making kingdoms happy.

Coming back to the present context, today human existence is grappling with a huge range of issues. Terrorism, famine, poverty, fundamentalism, tyranny and social crimes are eliciting a grim picture to the fore. The good thing, however, is being happy doesn’t have to do anything with these issues. It is something that is at the core our existence.

Unfortunately, many people succumb to unfavorable circumstances and make themselves lead a miserable life. It is noteworthy to understand that only a happy person can make others happy.lifestyle changes

If you want to be happier & healthier and ready to make lifestyle changes, there are several ways to do that. It is about time you have made a decision to be happy and bring the smile to the faces of your loved ones.

Here are the powerful lifestyle changes you need to rejuvenate your life:

  1. Be compassionate and help others

You are not the only one who is in dire straits, there are others who need your help and who do not know to get over their sorrows. Be compassionate and extend your helping hand to such people. This is a great human service and you will forget your own unhappiness. There is an age-old philosophy – “what goes around comes around” – so if you are ready to extend this gesture, you will get it back with interest. However, you shouldn’t help others for getting something in return, for such an attitude will not fulfill the purpose of attaining happiness. Rather, being compassionate and helpful gives a great satisfaction. By doing that you are providing a life change for two individuals – yourself and the recipient of your compassion.

  1. Connect with your friends

Being with friends is one of the greatest fulfillment. You don’t have to think and behave in a particular manner whenever you hang-out with your friends. When you are unhappy and hopeless, your friends are there for you. Moreover, staying isolated and lonely makes no sense when we are social animals and enjoy one another’s company. Be it a friend, family member or a colleague, you need a selfless person who can keep you motivated and lively. Indulge in a conversation with your friends and intimate them about the challenges you are confronting and the things you are learning from them. It would be great if you keep organizing sweet get- together with your close pals and spend precious moments with each other. On other occasions such as weddings or birthdays of your friends, you can give them their favorite bottle of beer with personalized beer bottle labels having photos and images of previous memories.

  1. Laugh, smile and encourage others to do so

Laughter has an enormous healing power as it is often termed as the best medicine. Spend some time with people who make you laugh or you can watch comic videos on the internet. Indulging in activities that prompt laughter, will give you a big relief and you can feel the flow of happiness. However, you shouldn’t stop at that, you should encourage others to laugh as well. Since laughter is contagious, your act of laughing may titillate others as well. It ensures that you are spreading a sense of positivity around yourself. Furthermore, smiling releases endorphins – hormones of happiness. A good way of smiling is to get hold of an old photo album consisting memorable photographs. Just go through them and you won’t stop yourself from smiling.

  1. Be grateful

Be grateful for life, as some moments bring happiness while others may make you upset, but the simple fact of life is it is your own choice to be happy and healthy. Many philosophers believe making a statement gives an individual more of what he is grateful for. So if you believe that you are grateful for a good health – you will indeed get more good health. Being grateful for the beauty of nature even soothes your innermost self. Come out and go into the lap of nature and feel the lush green trees, blooming flowers and appreciate mountains & valleys. If being grateful in this manner doesn’t make you feel happy and fulfilling, nothing is.

  1. Exercise regularly

Exercise is considered as a cure for every disease and negativity that unfortunately may come in your life. A regular exercise not only keeps your body weight in check, and it makes you stronger and gives you a feeling of youthfulness. When you work out daily, you become active, less stressed out, less anxious, calm and more importantly happier. Exercise releases dopamine – a neurotransmitter in your brain that is responsible for happiness and pleasure. Exercising also boosts your confidence. It gives you a feeling that you are well within the reach of neutralizing negative effects in your life.

Final Words

Happiness cannot and should not be one’s destination; it should be a way of life. Nobody can make you happy if you yourself don’t want to be. Everything in life cannot go according to your will, in fact sometimes everything opposite happens. But you always have options and reasons to be happy. The above-mentioned lifestyle changes are powerful tips to remain happy and healthy in life.

Artist Crafts Custom Tiny Wigs to Turn Ordinary Barbies into Glamorous Dolls

Custom Barbie Dolls by Rafinha Silva

Artist Rafinha Silva transforms ordinary dolls into fashion-forward women who are impeccably styled. From flawless makeup to beautiful wigs, the custom Barbie dolls are impressive works of art. Through his Instagram We Love the Royal Dolls, he shares the elaborate processes he uses to makeover these toys into realistic figurines—including styling tiny wigs for each of them.

Silva’s inspiration for a career in custom dolls comes from his youth. “I have always had a lot of affinity with art, and drawing women with long hair is one of my earliest childhood memories,” he said. Their coifs are easily their most striking feature; the women often have long hair that cascades across their shoulders and shimmers in the light.

Silva is like a glamorous Dr. Frankenstein when it comes to constructing his dolls; he will select different parts from a variety of Barbies to create one completely unique figurine. Working on an individual client-basis, he orders and selects features based on what the commission stipulates. Once he has all of his supplies, he will remove the doll’s makeup, hair, and outfit. Then, he fashions it all completely from scratch.

Since 2013, the Brazilian artist has produced over 500 custom dolls. Many are based on everyday people, but Silva is also inspired by celebrities and Disney princesses. When you take a look at his mesmerizing Instagram, you’ll instantly recognize some of your favorite singers and storybook royalties.
