The Navajo call this impressive monolithic structure Tsé Bitʼaʼí or ”rock with wings,” which refers to their creation legend of a great bird that brought the Navajo from the north to their present lands. Located in the four-corners region of New Mexico, the more commonly known rock outcropping, Shiprock, is the massive throat of an ancient volcano dating back 27 million years ago.

Our Milky Way hangs above this remote landscape in the early morning hours, its central core is visible on the right side with the distinctive Pipe Nebula pointing to the bright magnitude planets of Mars and Saturn. The orange hues on along the horizon are the city lights (light pollution) from the nearby town of Shiprock, New Mexico, about 8,000 in population. This panoramic image was composed of several separate vertical images composited in Photoshop.
