Interested in producing images on “the fringe of the otherworldly,” landscape photographer Paul Hoi creatively combines science fiction with psychedelia. Using a camera modified for full spectrum infrared, Hoi is able to craft dreamy scenes of nature that transform familiar visuals into foreign lands. During a recent trip to New Zealand, Hoi took this practice to new heights, turning his striking surroundings into stunning studies of color.

While car-camping through the country’s South Island, Hoi used a camera with a special lens that reveals an otherwise invisible light. This technological trick drastically alters the color composition of his photographs, transforming the region’s lush rainforests and verdant hills into brightly colored, bubble-gum pink landforms. Though slightly desaturated, the non-green tones of the cloudy skies, glacial lakes, and roaming wildlife remain relatively in-tact, culminating in perplexing landscapes that act as “vaguely familiar visual anchors of an alien world.”

Though Hoi’s specialty is landscape photography, he is not attracted to images that replicate reality. He is fascinated, rather, by depictions that alter perceptions and experiment with expectation. “I’m less interested in portraying landscapes ‘as they are,’ per journalistic or documentarian tradition, and more in seeing beyond the surface of an otherwise familiar landscape,” he explained to us. This creative approach to the craft sheds new light on the traditional type of photography, resulting in a beautiful body of work that is as mind-boggling as it is eye-catching.

Asymmetry

Lisa Halliday’s cunning tri-part novel is one of the most exciting debuts I’ve read in a long time. Asymmetry works on several levels, beguiling readers with two absorbing, seemingly unconnected narratives while exploring questions about what literature can do to transcend our personal experience and “reduce the blind spots” in our lives.

The book opens in Manhattan at the start of the Iraq war, with a December-May romance between a famous older writer and a young editorial assistant with more ambition than direction. Halliday pulls us deep into this offbeat relationship before jumping to a second, initially disorienting story about a young Iraqi-American economist — en route to visit his older brother in Kurdistan — who reflects on his life after being detained by immigration officials at London’s Heathrow airport.

We meet the twenty-five-year-old protagonist of the first section, “Folly,” sitting on an Upper West Side bench, trying to read a book whose long paragraphs and lack of quotation marks annoy her. When a man eating a Mister Softee sits down next to her, she recognizes him instantly. So do passersby. Halliday keeps the paragraphs short and punchy, and the dialogue neatly set off in quotation marks. “What else do you read?” he asks. “Oh, old stuff, mostly.” “So,” said the man, rising, “What’s your name?” “Alice.” “Who likes old stuff. See you around.”

Within weeks, she’s accepting a dripping cone, since “multiple-Pulitzer Prize winners don’t go around poisoning people.” When he asks if she’s game, she answers, “Well, no reason not to be, I guess.” He retorts, “There are plenty of reasons not to be.”

And they’re off to a quirky wonderland. Alice’s full name is Mary-Alice Dodge, a deliberate nod to Charles Dodgson and his most famous creation as Lewis Carroll. Curiosity runs through Asymmetry deliciously, like fudge ripples. Alice holds a looking glass up to Ezra Blazer, a playfully fictionalized portrait that channels Philip Roth, down to his repeatedly being bypassed for the Nobel Prize.

Halliday can be very funny, in a wry, snappy way. When Alice first sees Ezra’s numerous surgical scars, she asks, “Who did this to you?” “Norman Mailer,” her aging paramour quips. She notes that, given his delicacy, sex with him “could feel like playing Operation.” They lob accusations of “cradlerobber” and “graverobber” across his vast bed.

It’s an asymmetrical relationship from the start. Initially, Ezra calls the shots — disappearing to his country house for months on end to write, singing, “The party’s over . . . ” when he wants Alice to leave. He calls her sweetheart, feeds her great books and the best writing on the Holocaust, and funds upgrades to her wardrobe and her sweltering walkup. They share a passion for baseball, though not the same team. (Thanks to her grandmother, she’s a Red Sox fan at a propitious time, the year the curse is broken.) Their repartee is wonderful. “Is she still alive, your grandmother?” he asks. “Yep. Would you like her number? You’re about the same age.” “It’s a little early in our relationship for you to be satirizing me, Mary-Alice.”

How does Alice feel about all this? Is she using him? No more than he’s using her. “Do you ever think this isn’t good for you?” he asks. She says he makes her happy.

Naturally, things change. He needs additional surgeries. She picks up his arcane grocery requests at Zabar’s and starts to think about her long-term plans. “If there were a pill that would make her a writer living in Europe and another that would keep him alive and in love with her until the day she died, which would she choose?” she wonders. (Note: the Massachusetts-born author currently lives in Milan, Italy.) After she expresses guarded criticism of his new novel, he says, “I know what you’re up to.” “What?” “You’re writing. Aren’t you?”

This is where Halliday folds her literary origami in unexpected ways, and Asymmetry starts to assume a new shape. When Ezra encourages Alice to write about her complicated father, she tells him that “writing about myself doesn’t seem important enough.” But, she wonders, is it even possible that “a former choirgirl from Massachusetts might be capable of conjuring the consciousness” of a completely different human being?

I don’t want to spoil the surprises, so suffice it to say that we come to realize that Halliday’s book, like so many first novels, is about searching for one’s place in the world. What isn’t like so many first novels is the assurance and brilliance with which she manages this. Questions about shifting power dynamics and stepping outside yourself to discover your true mettle are further explored in the second section of the novel, “Madness.” While not as delightful as “Folly,” it is ultimately just as moving and even more thought-provoking.

Halliday plants sly hints about what she’s up to throughout all three sections, saving oblique revelations for the poignant, hilarious coda, an interview featuring Ezra as a castaway on the long-running BBC4 radio program Desert Island Discs. Along the way, she raises penetrating questions about the creative process and its limits. If writers like Sheila Heti ask, “How should a person be?” Halliday considers issues of cultural appropriation and asks, “What should a writer write?” In a particularly telling passage, she notes that the writer “can hold her mirror up to whatever subject she chooses, at whatever angle she likes — she can even hold it such that she herself remains outside its frame, the better to de-narcissize the view.” Still, she says, “there’s no getting around the fact that she’s always the one holding the mirror.”

Asymmetry has already been anointed with a Whiting Award, an uncannily prescient herald of literary promise whose previous recipients include Alice McDermott, Jeffrey Eugenides, Jonathan Franzen, Anthony Marra, Elif Batuman, David Foster Wallace, and Colson Whitehead. It’s not a stretch to say that Lisa Halliday, on the strength of this sophisticated first work, belongs in that company.

Do you ever find yourself in a mental rut?

Sometimes you have days, or even weeks, whereby as much as a part of you wants to be active, you just can’t bring yourself to do so. It can literally feel like you’re wading through quicksand!

There’s one thing, however, that can not only help get you out of the rut but can help keep you out.

And that is; momentum.

See, the brain is a pattern making machine that’s built to find a route and follow it consistently. It does this because it wants to conserve energy, it’s stingy, and this is why it’s so hard to make a behavioural change, particularly when you don’t ‘feel’ like it. It completely goes against your homeostatic drives.

However, that also means that once you have a habit in place, momentum can be a powerful tool to use to your advantage. After having established a pattern of behaviour, you will continue to follow it, and it will become easier and easier.

In a sense, momentum is far more important than motivation.

Though in the moment it can feel incredibly difficult to get up and break the cycle, there is a similar, repeatable process that you can do which will help you create enough momentum to get out and take action consistently.

Here are five steps to get yourself out of a mental rut.

  • Flood your brain with dopamine

If you want to make any behavioural change when you’re dealing low energy and enthusiasm, you have to begin by altering your state. To do that you need to change your neurochemistry by naturally stimulating your dopamine production. Dopamine, sometimes known as the motivation molecule, will help you to feel like you want to get stuff done.

Here are a few ways to boost your dopamine:

 

  • Set a strong intention

I mentioned setting effective goals as one of the ways to improve dopamine production. This is partially why setting an intention is vital. When you have something to work towards your dopamine naturally increases. The other reason this is so important is that it keeps your mind focused. Mind-wandering is incredibly taxing on your mental energy, and it is much more likely to occur if you don’t have a guiding goal to direct your attention towards. The stronger the intention, and the more emotion you can associate with it, the more profound the effects are going to be.

For example, you may want to get out of a mental slump you are in by setting yourself the intention of running every day and competing in a 10km race. You can make the experience emotional by thinking about how good you’ll look and feel about yourself when you’ve finished the race. Don’t worry about being a little vain; the point is to get yourself excited about the idea.

  • Choose a set of reference experiences

It can be tough to take on a new challenge when there aren’t any recent memories of similar experiences. A reference experience is a smaller goal whose main purpose is to serve as an example in your memory, reminding you that you can do something. Once you’ve set an intention, you want to think of a set of actions that will compliment your intention and show you tangible signs of progress.

So for example, you may not be able to run 10km yet, but you are physically capable of running 3km, so you can decide on a shorter route that you can do, and start to visualize yourself doing it. You could then slowly scale up to 5km and 7km trails in mental preparation for the larger race. Reference experiences will give your body endorphins as a reward for completing them, which reinforce the behaviour in the future and help in the momentum process.

  • Take the smallest step and increase it incrementally

The first part of this step is to start your momentum train with the smallest action you can imagine. In the example I’ve been using this far, that may even just be putting on your running clothes and stretching. Any movement is better than no movement, and it’s more effective to start small to avoid burnout. After that you want to decide on a time scale at which you’re going to increase it slightly, I’d recommend once or twice a week. You want to be in a position where you’re looking forward to the increase. If you’ve decided that your first step is to put your running shoes on, then you can do that for three days so by the third day your itching to get out and run around the block.

  • Repeat

 

Finally, once you’ve gone through all of these steps, continue to make small improvements until you get the sense that you’ve reached a plateau and are ready for a new intention.

If you feel like you’re stuck in a mental rut, understand that it’s just a feeling. It’s not going to last forever and practicing mindfulness of your emotions will ensure that you are better able to see this over time. The human mind is a wonderful tool when you can get it to work in your favour, and the principle of momentum can help you do just that. Follow these five steps, and you’ll quickly see how fickle the feelings of sluggishness truly were, and how rapidly vitality can become the norm again.
