Glacial Crystals by PatrickMarsonOng

One of those sweet-sweet morning in Jökulsárlón’s Ice Beach, Iceland. These ice crystals are formed when huge chunks of glaciers are washed out from the lagoon and bombarded by the roaring sea. During low tides, these glacial ice sit calmly along the shore where one can appreciate their complexities. Truly a sight to behold. It’s the one place that you must not miss when visiting Iceland.

Reconciliation by davidrichterphoto

For too long the winter has been holding out this year to make a strong comeback this past weekend with temperatures deep into the arctic range. On the crest of the Ore Mountains, the sun was able to burn off the heavy fog for short periods of time. Fortunately, I found myself in a birch forest dotted with small beech trees and the occasional spruce and fir, all covered in a thick layer of rime ice.

Beyond the Mists of Magog by AdamGibbs

A wonderful morning when all seems to come together. What could be better than standing in a frosty meadow surrounded by majestic peaks, an excellent reflection, autumn colour and a thin veil of fog. Perfect!

Stokksnes 9 a.m. (II) by Carlosmacr

When i traveled 2 years ago to Iceland, there was one night when i didn’t plan anything special, as the place where we were sleeping was still far from the Jokulsarlon and travelling with family was not the perfect time to drive alone 200 km during the night. So i when driving to the hostel i saw in the road a sign where written Stokksnes. So next day, before sunrise i drove to that place which i though was very unknown as i had not read anything about it before the trip. 🙂 Once there i was completely alone and the place really amazing. When i finished the trip and came back home i could see that i was completely wrong as i started to see in 500px, almost everyday, a shot from this location. I am happy i decided in the last minute to visit this fantastic location, not far from the city where we were sleeping, in Höfn. Just wonder what would be if i had came to this place in the night, when we could see clear northern lights from Höfn 🙂

Thanks for your visits and wish you all a nice weekend

—————————————————————————————————-

The Crystal Maw by alexnoriega

This is an updated process of one of my favorite images, originally posted early this year. Better clarity, punchier highlights, more shadow detail, MUCH less blue saturation, a more appealing hue, and a slight crop to this rendition. It’s closer to reality, while being in line with the vision I had for the shot. I’ve been slowly revising it over the past seven months or so, and I think it’s finally dialed. I guess something about winter in Minneapolis must have made me unable to see the ridiculous colors of a few images I put out around that time. Below is the text that accompanied my original post.

—–

Wisconsin’s Lake Superior ice caves require walking across a couple miles of lake ice to reach. Luckily for me, I chose to live in the Midwest the first winter they’ve been accessible since 2009. I missed a couple of rare freezes in the northwest while I was gone, but I gained this in exchange – and it’s exactly the type of ice image I’ve longed for.

This image has a short story to accompany it. The formations you see at the top, framing the image, are maybe 3 feet off the icy floor. I went on a day that was relatively warm (+25F), and the floor was turning to supercooled slush farther into the cave. I had to lie down/crawl around in it for almost an hour to compose this image. When I stood up after shooting, I panicked.

I COULD NOT FEEL MY BUTT. This wasn’t the numbness I had experienced growing up snowboarding, sledding, and playing in the snow. This was much worse. Was my butt frostbitten? Would it become necrotic and fall off in a couple days? Had I just sacrificed my gluteus for a single image? Is any image worth losing a butt over? I awkwardly hobbled the two miles back to my car, and didn’t feel a single thing until I was on the road home.

I’m still worried my butt is going to fall off, guys.

I’m scared.

Now, contrary to what might be suggested by what you’ve just read, I can assure you I am capable of acting in a professional manner. Rain Man by MilesMorganPhotography

Wait, what?? You mean you DIDN’T view this on black? Sinner.

After exhausting you with the last story, I’m just going to post this up here without all the theatrics.

Nothing groundbreaking here. Just a standard shot of Proxy Falls. Just felt like I needed a little more green in my life. The title is in honor of my friend Jeff, a non-photographer who went with me on this trip and reveled in the soaking we received. He and I have been having adventures together for 30 years.

For those of you that are doing the math in your heads right now and thinking “Man, he must be OLD”… suck it.

* drop mic. Walks off stage.
